Why Canada is helping Canadians flee the Middle East — and what it costs
OTTAWA — Ever since the U.S. launched its war against Iran on Feb. 28, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has said her top priority is helping Canadians who want to leave the Middle East.
As of Friday, nearly 8,500 Canadians and permanent residents have made it home to Canada from the region, while more than a thousand have left the Middle East for safe third countries, her department says.
Here's a look at how and why Ottawa helps people leave dangerous places, and what it costs.

‘One elbow up, one down’: The Carney government after its first year
OTTAWA — If one thing is clear a year into his tenure, it's that Mark Carney is running the federal government very differently from the way Justin Trudeau did it.
Much of Ottawa's chattering class has settled on describing the former central banker as a CEO-style leader who wants to run the country like a Fortune 500 company, and makes little time for consulting while he races to implement his economic agenda.
Still, when The Canadian Press asked the prime minister on his way into cabinet -
Iran war adds new uncertainty to the Bank of Canada’s already clouded lens
OTTAWA — The Bank of Canada will be balancing a last-minute flood of economic data with uncertainty around trade and war in the Middle East as it prepares to make its second interest rate decision of 2026 this week.
Economists say the central bank faces choppy waters in setting monetary policy this year, as a surprise spike in unemployment and weakness elsewhere in the economy weigh against fresh inflation risks from a global oil price shock.
The Bank of Canada's policy rate stands at 2.25 -

Barnes, Barrett help Raptors find footing in big 122-115 win over Suns
TORONTO — Jalen Green drove to the net with 45 seconds left to play, going for a layup that would pull his Phoenix Suns to within two points of the Toronto Raptors.
