The father of a young Canadian found dead on a beach in Australia on Monday says her family hopes to bring her remains home next week, after an autopsy suggested dingo bites on her body were likely not her immediate cause of death.
But the preliminary assessment of the body of 19-year-old Piper James, found on the island of K'gari, says there were "pre-mortem" bites in addition to evidence consistent with drowning.

He finished behind France's Youri Duplessis-Kergomard in the final and ahead of Switzerland's Tobias Baur.
Sweden's David Mobaerg was fourth after crashing earlier in the race.
Duplessis-Kergomard overtook Howden in the course's final rollers.

Drunk driver gets 90-day driving ban after car flips over on Lougheed Highway near Mission
MISSION — Mission RCMP have removed one impaired driver from local roads after his car struck the center median on Lougheed Highway last week.
On January 16, at around 11 p.m., a driver called police after seeing a black Smart car on its side on one of the Lougheed’s westbound lanes near Hayward Street.
Police then found the uninjured driver standing outside, who told them that he was looking at a passing train when the incident happened.

MONTREAL — CF Montreal acquired Argentine defender Tomas Avilés on loan from Inter Miami CF through the 2026 season on Friday.
The Major League Soccer team will hold an option to acquire the player following the loan.
In return, Montreal sent a 2026 international roster spot to Inter Miami.

CALGARY — The Canadian Olympic Committee officially nominated its bobsled team for the upcoming Milan Cortina Games on Friday.

A federal judge ruled Friday that President Donald Trump’s administration must keep federal funds flowing to child care subsidies and other social service programs in five Democratic-controlled states — at least for now.The ruling Friday from U.S. District Judge Vernon Broderick extends by two weeks a temporary one issued earlier this month that blocked the federal government from holding back the money from California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota and New York. 1 dead after possibly ‘targeted’ shooting in Burnaby: IHIT
BURNABY — Homicide investigators have been called after a late afternoon shooting that killed a man in Burnaby.
Just after 5:30 p.m. on Thursday (Jan. 22), Burnaby RCMP responded to reports of shots fired near the 3700 block of Canada Way and found one victim.
Despite life-saving efforts, the man died on scene.
Officers then located a car fire in the 5000 block of Buxton Street shortly after the incident.

Police says man dead in ‘targeted’ shooting in Burnaby, B.C.
BURNABY — A man has been killed in Burnaby, B.C., in what police are describing as a targeted shooting.
RCMP say police responded to calls about shots being fired on Canada Way at around 5:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon
Officers found an injured man, who died at the scene despite emergency life-saving efforts from responders.
Police also found a burning vehicle on Buxton Street shortly after the shooting, and investigators are looking into whether the cases are linked.

CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack crews have tackled a large barn fire that sparked in Greendale yesterday evening (Jan. 22).
