Justice Department sees no basis for civil rights probe in Minnesota ICE shooting, official says
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department does not believe there is currently any basis to open a criminal civil rights investigation into the killing of a woman by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minneapolis, a top department official said Tuesday. The decision to keep the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division out of the investigation into the fatal shooting of Renee Good marks a sharp departure from past administrations, which have moved quickly to probe shootin -

Ex-journalists lament closure of Ming Pao, Canada’s last Chinese-language daily paper
VANCOUVER — Former journalists for Ming Pao Daily News say its impending closure will be a devastating blow for consumers of the only Chinese-language daily newspaper in Canada.
Ming Pao announced on Monday that its final Vancouver and Toronto editions will be published on Jan. 16 and its newsrooms and offices will shut on Jan. 31, with at least 60 staff given notices of termination.
Ming Pao, which launched its two Canadian editions in 1993, says in an article that the closure decision wa -
Why an Ontario couple is leading a court battle to change MAID in B.C.
OTTAWA — Gaye and Jim O'Neill have spend countless hours thinking about their daughter's final hours in April 2023.
It's a memory they say they'd wish on no one — and it's the reason why they joined a years-long legal campaign to change the way medical assistance in dying is delivered in British Columbia.
The O'Neills are at the centre of a Charter of Rights challenge, now before the B.C. Supreme Court, that seeks to end the practice of so-called "forced transfers" — compelling -
IHIT detectives suspect organized crime may be involved in body found in Surrey home
SURREY — Homicide detectives in B.C. say they believe organized crime may be responsible for the discovery of a man’s body inside a burning home in Surrey early Monday.
Shortly after 7 a.m. on Monday, January 12, Surrey Police Service (SPS) officers responded to calls of a house fire in the 12700 block 56 Avenue to assist Surrey Fire Services (SFS) with road closures. During their efforts to extinguish the fully engulfed residence and search it for any victims, SFS members discovered -
YOUR PERSPECTIVE: The path forward in B.C. is together or not at all
At this time last year, we were fighting external economic threats from the U.S. and now some would rather we turn on each other.
Building projects in partnership with First Nations means jobs and prosperity for the entire province. We simply can’t afford to walk away from co-operation with First Nations and choose, instead, to fight.
Reconciliation isn’t new, and it isn’t radical. It reflects a broad consensus in this province that working in partnership with First Nations is -

Toronto Raptors exceeding expectations at midway point of NBA season
TORONTO — A year ago, the Toronto Raptors were torn between pushing for a play-in berth or tanking for a top draft pick, but 12 months later they’re exceeding early expectations and positioned to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2022.
Head coach Darko Rajakovic was asked to assess how his team was doing after 41 games -- the exact middle of the Raptors' 2025-26 season -- after Toronto's 115-102 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday. Although the Raptors have a 24-17 rec -

Source: Four CFL teams interested in Pickett after veteran linebacker released
It's always good to have options, and it appears Adarius Pickett has plenty after being released Tuesday by the Ottawa Redblacks.
The move was mutually agreed upon by both parties. Pickett, 29, was slated to become a free agent next month but the three-time East Division All-CFL selection is now free to sign with any team.
A CFL source requesting anonymity said four clubs have already expressed interest in Pickett. The source spoke on the condition of anonymity as no CFL team has signed the vete -

CALGARY — Denmark's bobsled and skeleton federation is urging other countries to look closer at Canada's actions in an Olympic qualification dispute causing friction in the international sliding community.

Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton says athlete welfare was the reason for the withdrawals, but some co -

B.C. Ombudsperson flags hour-long waits for income, disability calls to be answered
British Columbia's ombudsperson says people calling the government with questions about income and disability assistance are facing long waits, sometimes of more than an hour, creating barriers to accessing essential services.
The most recent ministry data, released by Jay Chalke's office, shows that between 2022 and 2024, only about 13 per cent of calls were answered within 10 minutes on average, despite the government having set a service standard requiring 80 per cent of calls to be answered -

Fact File: Canadian store’s security photo manipulated to show mountain lion break-in
Social media posts this month claimed a mountain lion played with toys and got high on catnip after breaking into a Colorado pet store. COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Rick Bowness was enjoying time on his boat in Florida when he received a call from Don Waddell on Monday afternoon.
