CHILLIWACK — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is now investigating a fatal motor vehicle incident on Boxing Day evening in Chilliwack.
Shortly after 10:15 p.m., a white Ford pickup truck struck a power pole near the intersection of Yale and Banford roads, where emergency responders attended and found the lone occupant dead on the scene.“The RCMP reported no police involvement with the pickup truck prior to the collision and the IIO was not notified at the time,&rdquo

EDMONTON, ALBERTA, CANADA — Alberta's election agency has fired the starter's pistol on the race to collect enough names for a referendum on the province quitting Canada.
Elections Alberta announced Friday that Mitch Sylvestre and the Alberta Prosperity Project have from Saturday until May 2 to collect just under 178,000 signatures to qualify.

RICHMOND — Vancouver International Airport says an Air India pilot was arrested as he was preparing for a flight last week.
Richmond RCMP did not identify the airline but say a pilot was arrested on Dec. 23 after a "report of concern" involving an airline crew member.
Police and an airport spokeswoman say the flight was delayed for several hours but departed safely that afternoon.

Some Haitian migrants arrested in Quebec on Christmas Day deported to U.S.
Some of the 19 migrants of Haitian origin arrested in Quebec on Christmas Day have been deported to the United States.
Canada Border Services Agency says the migrants' asylum claims were processed and those who were deemed inadmissible were sent back south of the border.
In an emailed statement, the agency didn't say how many would-be refugees were deported.

Tractor trailer crash critically injures two in Surrey, B.C.
SURREY — Two people have been critically injured in a crash involving a tractor trailer and two smaller vehicles in Metro Vancouver on New Year's Day.
Surrey police say the crash happened around 5:20 p.m. near the intersection of 32 Avenue and 194 Street.
Three people in the smaller vehicles were taken to hospital for treatment, two of them in critical condition.
Police did not provide an update to their conditions.

SURREY — Police in Surrey, B.C., are investigating two separate shootings that happened overnight that saw one man injured.
