OTTAWA — Immigration Minister Lena Diab has extended the pause on new applications through the Private Sponsorship for Refugees Program for another 12 months as the department works to clear its backlog.
New ministerial instructions were published in the Canada Gazette on Friday, along with a notice on the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada website.
The pause was to be lifted at the end of December but will now be in place for another year, until Dec. 31, 2026.

TORONTO — Canadians who bought or drank recalled plant-based milk linked to a listeria outbreak have reached a $6.5-million settlement with Danone Canada, Wal-Mart Canada Corp., and Intact Insurance Company.

Cargo unloaded from sinking barge off B.C. coast as planning starts for move south
BELLA BELLA — The local First Nation in the vicinity of a sinking barge off the central British Columbia coast says some cargo containers have been moved off the damaged vessel.
The Heiltsuk First Nation says 25 containers from the barge that was being towed by a tug from Alaska to Seattle have been moved over to a secondary barge.

CHILLIWACK — SD33 is moving ahead with its plans for a second, much-needed elementary school as district enrollment continues to grow in Chilliwack.

CHILLIWACK — Police in Chilliwack have tackled a little bit of nearly every property crime in the first half of this month.

Rodriguez suspended Marwah Rizqy from caucus earlier this week, claiming she had fired the chief of staff of the official Opposition without consulting him.

OTTAWA — Saab's CEO is making it clear that his company's decision on whether to set up shop in Canada will depend on whether Ottawa decides to buy its Gripen aircraft.

Two broken prison sprinklers cost Correctional Service Canada $1.1M
OTTAWA — Correctional Service Canada incurred a $1.1 million damage bill after an inmate at a New Brunswick prison broke two sprinklers.
The damage was reported in last year's public accounts document recently tabled by the federal government.
A Correctional Service Canada spokesperson said the incident occurred at the Shepody Healing Centre in May 2024.
The facility, located at the Dorchester Penitentiary, is a regional treatment centre for inmates with serious mental health conditions.

SPARWOOD — A man has died while working at a coal mine in the British Columbia Interior near the boundary with Alberta.
Elk Valley RCMP say police were notified Thursday at 7 a.m. that a 39-year-old man from Hosmer had been reported missing at Elk Valley Resources' Elkview Operations in Sparwood, B.C.
