WHISTLER — Conservation officers in British Columbia say they killed a black bear after it attacked a woman walking her dog in Whistler.
A statement posted online by the Conservation Officer Service says the woman was walking her leashed dog in the Kadenwood neighbourhood around 8:30 p.m. on Monday when she was knocked to the ground and bitten by the bear.The statement says she was taken to hospital by ambulance and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

VICTORIA — British Columbia’s auditor general says the body in charge of providing legal aid for those with low incomes doesn’t have processes or information to ensure people get timely and high-quality help.
The report from acting auditor general Sheila Dodds says Legal Aid BC decided its funding needs based on current demand rather than growth forecasts, never determined the number of lawyers it needed and didn’t follow its own policies on client intake and eligibility. -

MISSION — Mission RCMP dealt with a pair of high-risk calls Sunday (Apr. 27), including a standoff involving a loaded compound bow and a domestic assault case.

Pacific Institution inmate dies while in custody
ABBOTSFORD — Corrections Canada says an inmate at the Pacific Institution in Abbotsford died while in custody over the weekend.
According to a news release, 81-year-old Darwin Heilman died of apparent natural causes Sunday (Apr. 27).
Heilman had been in custody since 1971 and was serving an indeterminate sentence.
Corrections Canada policy requires that police and the coroner be notified of the death of any inmate. -

Blue Jays activate Gold Glove outfielder Daulton Varsho off injured list
TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays activated outfielder Daulton Varsho off the 10-day injured list Tuesday ahead of a game against the visiting Boston Red Sox.
Varsho started the season on the injured list as he continued to recover from a right shoulder procedure in September.

Ottawa police say officer-involved shooting near downtown mall
OTTAWA — Police presence is heavy around a downtown Ottawa mall as police report an officer-involved shooting in the area.
Ottawa Police said on social media the doors to the Rideau Centre were locked, but they have since re-opened.
The shooting took place near the northeast corner of that mall, which is located a short walk away from Parliament Hill.
Police say there is no active threat to public safety, and there are “no outstanding suspects.”

Abbotsford police arrest local driver who tried to flee from authorities
ABBOTSFORD — Abbotsford Police say officers were able to arrest a 20-year-old man who attempted to flee from authorities Sunday (Apr. 27) night.

B.C. Premier David Eby not interested in taking on federal NDP leadership
OTTAWA — B.C. Premier David Eby says he’s not interested in taking the helm of the federal NDP, now that the party finds itself without a leader following Monday’s election.
Eby would not say who he thinks should take on the role but acknowledged it’s going to be a “challenging job” after a “tough night” for the party.

No public risk as Agassiz RCMP apprehend man Monday night
AGASSIZ — Agassiz RCMP are releasing details of an incident Monday evening (Apr. 28) in the Mount Woodside area.
Police say officers were called to a residence to deal with a man who police say was experiencing mental health issues.
The RCMP Integrated Emergency Response Team managed to take the man into custody safely. Police say there was never a risk to public safety.

Elections Canada says more than 19.2M voters cast a ballot in federal election
OTTAWA — Elections Canada says more than 67 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot in the federal election — more than 19.2 million people.
While this election was widely expected to see increased turnout, it did not surpass the record set in March 1958, when 79.4 per cent of eligible electors voted.
But turnout was higher than in the last federal election, when 62.6 per cent of eligible voters headed to the polls.

WASHINGTON — White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said U.S. President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order on automobile tariffs later Tuesday which is intended to provide some relief to the industry besieged by multiple duties.

Chilliwack-Hope MP Mark Strahl resoundingly re-elected
CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack-Hope MP Mark Strahl has been overwhelmingly re-elected, improving on the 46 per cent support he received four years ago.
As of 9 p.m. Monday night, and with 98/243 polls reporting, Strahl now has 55.1 per cent to Liberal Party candidate Zeeshan Khan’s mark of 32.4 per cent. Strahl received 6,928 votes compared to 4,096 votes for Khan.
Strahl was first elected from the Conservative Party in 2011 and had been seeking his fifth term.

Political newcomer wins hotly contested Abbotsford-South Langley race
ABBOTSFORD — Independent candidate Mike de Jong’s attempt to upset the establishment and win the hotly contested Abbotsford-South Langley riding fell short Monday night.
Instead his Conservative rival Sukhman Gill won the riding, edging Liberal candidate Kevin Gillies.
With 55 of 215 polls reporting, Gill had captured 42 per cent of the vote, Gillies had 32 per cent of the vote and de Jong had 21 per cent of the vote.
