OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced the appointment of a new independent senator to fill one of the Senate’s few remaining vacancies.
The Prime Minister’s Office says in a news release that the Governor General has appointed Danièle Henkel as an independent senator to fill a Senate vacancy for Quebec.
Henkel is a businesswoman, strategic adviser, mentor, coach, speaker and author who immigrated to Quebec in the 1990s, her website says.

OTTAWA — Canada’s new fentanyl czar, it turns out, isn’t a czar at all.
The federal government named Kevin Brosseau to the position earlier this week but made it official in an order-in-council published today.
In that order Brosseau’s official title is not “fentanyl czar” but the “Commissioner of Canada’s Fight Against Fentanyl.”

LIBERTY, Mo. (AP) — An 86-year-old Kansas City man pleaded guilty Friday to a lesser charge in the 2023 shooting of Ralph Yarl, a Black honor student who rang the white man’s doorbell by mistake.
