ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — A new report from Statistics Canada says Nova Scotia had the highest rate of poverty among the provinces in 2022, and Manitoba had the highest rate of deep poverty.

BELLA BELLA, B.C. — Online voting has begun in what the Heiltsuk Nation calls a historic referendum on a written constitution for the First Nation on British Columbia’s central coast.

National rent prices hit 18-month low in January: report
TORONTO — Average asking rents across Canada hit an 18-month low in January, declining 4.4 per cent on an annual basis to $2,100.
A monthly report by Rentals.ca and Urbanation, which analyzes listings in the former’s network, said January marked the fourth straight month of annual rent declines after 38 consecutive increases.

CFL slaps defensive lineman Lemon with second suspension for positve drug test
TORONTO — The CFL has slapped American defensive lineman Shawn Lemon with an additional two-game suspension for violating its drug policy.Lemon is currently serving an indefinite suspension for betting on CFL games, including one in which he played.
Should the 36-year-old be reinstated by the league and sign with another CFL team, he’d have to then serve the two-game ban before being allowed to return to the field.

Listing crime cartels as terrorists would help in fentanyl fight: RCMP commissioner
OTTAWA — RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme says he welcomes a federal plan to list organized crime cartels as terrorist entities to fight fentanyl trafficking.
In an interview, Duheme says listing criminal organizations would give the Mounties more tools to pursue charges and enforce the law.

Federal government ends boycott of advertising spending on Meta platforms
OTTAWA — The federal government has ended its boycott on buying advertisements on Meta platforms, including Facebook and Instagram.
The Privy Council Office confirmed the government’s decision, first reported by CTV news.
Ottawa stopped purchasing ad space from Facebook’s parent company in July 2023 after the California-based firm blocked all news content on its platforms in Canada.
