A federal judge has effectively lifted a Saturday deadline for a B.C. farm to kill about 400 ostriches hit by an outbreak of avian flu.
Justice Michael Battista ruled Friday to stay the cull order imposed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency while the farm involved seeks a judicial review of the case.
Battista said in a written decision that going ahead with Saturday’s order before the matter could be further examined “would expose the applicant to irreparable harm.”

DENVER (AP) — A tour guide killed at a former Colorado gold mine last year fell out of a crowded elevator taking tourists below ground after apparently not latching its door closed, documents obtained by The Associated Press show.

VANCOUVER — Avalanche Canada is warning anyone planning to head into British Columbia’s backcountry that incoming winter weather is expected to bring a “major increase in avalanche danger.”
The forecaster says the past three weeks of dry conditions have formed layers that won’t bond with new snow, so as amounts accumulate, it expects “large and dangerous avalanches to be triggered, both naturally and by humans.”

MONTREAL — The death of a Quebec teen who was poisoned from a synthetic opioid should raise alarm bells for authorities to do more to prevent similar tragedies.
Coroner Stéphanie Gamache issued the call this week in a report into the death of 15-year-old Mathis Boivin.
Boivin died in December 2023 after he consumed N-desethyl isotonitazene, a powerful synthetic opioid.

The NHL salary cap is expected to climb US$25.5 million over the next three seasons, according to figures released Friday by the league and the NHL Players’ Association.

OTTAWA — The Conservative Party had a banner fundraising year in 2024, when it nearly doubled the combined total collected by the Liberals and NDP by raising almost $41.8 million.
