Electric vehicle rebates paused as federal program runs out of money
OTTAWA — The federal government has paused an incentive program that offered Canadians rebates of up to $5,000 when buying or leasing electric vehicles.
In an update on its website, Transport Canada says the Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) Program has been paused as “funds have been fully committed.”
The department says more than 546,000 vehicles have been sold or leased with incentives through the program since it began in 2019.

Police investigating after man injured in fire outside Vancouver SkyTrain station
VANCOUVER — Police in Vancouver are looking for witnesses after a man was injured in a fire outside a SkyTrain station in the city.
They say the 40-year-old man was found by a driver around 2 a.m. on Sunday outside the Main Street-Science World station.

CPC announces $535,000 in medal bonuses for Canada’s Paris Paralympians
OTTAWA — The Canadian Paralympic Committee announced Monday that a total of $535,000 was awarded to Canadian athletes for their achievements at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.
The Paris Games marked the first distribution of the Paralympic Performance Recognition program, which was announced in January 2024.
The program gives Paralympians the same incentive for winning medals that Canada’s Olympic athletes receive.

Quebec measles outbreak grows to 11 cases; officials warn of thousands of exposures
MONTREAL — The Quebec government says thousands of people might have been exposed to measles at a shopping mall north of Montreal earlier this month, as an outbreak of the highly contagious disease continues to grow.
Officials say the current outbreak that began last month has now reached 11 cases.The Health Department has listed dozens of potential exposure sites in Montreal and in suburbs to the north and south of the city.

CHILLIWACK — B.C. Parks says campsites at many of its managed facilities can now be reserved for the upcoming spring 2025 camping season.
The provincial agency made the announcement Monday (Jan. 13), saying campsites can be reserved four months ahead of the desired arrival date. Reservations for the May 2025 long weekend open this week for many BC Parks campgrounds that accept reservations.

A search and rescue team on Vancouver Island says it rescued a man who suffered a “serious fall” while skiing at Mt. Cain this weekend.
Comox Valley Search & Rescue says in a post to social media that members responded to rescue the unconscious 35-year-old from the mountain’s west bowl on Saturday.
It says though the incident happened outside ski boundaries, the ski hill’s patrol team sprang to action and began rescue efforts including preparing for air assistance.

Canada Post says 25% stamp price increase takes effect today
OTTAWA — The cost to send a letter in Canada is increasing by about 25 per cent, effective today.
Canada Post says the cost of stamps for domestic mail bought in a booklet, coil or pane has increased by 25 cents to $1.24 per stamp.The cost of a single domestic stamp is now $1.44, up from $1.15.
Canada Post proposed the increase in September last year. It says the higher price is required to better align stamp prices with the rising cost of providing letter mail service to all Canadians.
