VANCOUVER — Inland ferry services that are crucial to several small communities in southeast British Columbia face being further cut from today as a labour dispute on Kootenay Lake escalates.
The West Kootenay communities of Harrop, Procter and Glade could see their ferry service reduced after a B.C. Labour Relations Board ruling that permits expansion of the strike has already limited sailings on the major Kootenay Lake routes.

Quebec ski hill operators’ spirits aren’t dampened by rainy and warm weather
MONTREAL — Quebec ski hill operators say they’re remaining optimistic despite warm temperatures and heavy rainfall that could dampen the lucrative holiday ski period.
The co-owner of the Mont-Saint-Bruno hill on Montreal’s South Shore says the conditions resemble spring skiing, during which people can dress lightly and leave bulky layers at home.
Stéphanie Grenier says the snow is still in good shape, since cold weather earlier in December allowed her company to blanket -

New Brunswick to issue roadside suspensions for impaired driving starting Jan. 1
FREDERICTON — Motorists in New Brunswick will be subject to stiff new penalties for impaired driving beginning Jan. 1.
Changes to the province’s Motor Vehicle Act give police discretion to issue an immediate roadside suspension to impaired drivers, or to lay charges under the Criminal Code.

Red Wings prospect Axel Sandin-Pellikka leading Sweden at world juniors
OTTAWA — Axel Sandin-Pellikka loves a good dangle.
The defenceman idolized Patrick Kane as a kid after his dad brought a Chicago Blackhawks jersey home to Sweden with the stickhandling wizard’s No. 88 stitched on the back.
Sandin-Pellikka was mesmerized by the star forward’s quick hands and deft touch.
He’s now got plenty of that in his own tool belt. The 19-year-old has also come to realize sometimes less is more.

Quebec needs people to run for local office. The problem is they keep resigning.
MONTREAL — Municipal leaders across Quebec are looking for ways to get young people, especially women, to run for local office in next year’s elections, but that is a tall order given the well-documented incidents of harassment and intimidation faced by elected officials in the province.
As many as 800 municipal councillors — 10 per cent of the roughly 8,000 people elected to local office in 2021 — have quit before the end of their term, says Quebec’s elections agen -
