TORONTO — The Toronto Raptors have signed guard AJ Lawson to a two-way contract, the NBA team announced Wednesday.The six-foot-six, 185-pound guard from Toronto averaged 24.0 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 35.1 minutes in 11 games (all starts) this season with the Long Island Nets, the G League affiliate of the Brooklyn Nets.

HALIFAX — A federal fisheries officer has been suspended for 10 days without pay for his role in arresting two Mi’kmaq elver fishers late at night and releasing them in only their socked feet.
Kevin Hartling and Blaise Sylliboy, both in their 20s, were arrested on March 26 as they fished for baby eels near Shelburne, N.S.

RIVIÈRE-DU-LOUP, Que. — The RCMP say they’ve arrested a man in connection with alleged hate speech posted on social networks Telegram and X.
The federal police force says in a statement today that its Integrated National Security Enforcement Team investigated the man from Rivière-du-Loup, Que., about 400 kilometres northeast of Montreal.

Former Chilliwack resident passes at Mission correctional institution
MISSION — Correctional Service Canada says an inmate at Mission Institution died last week while in custody.
CSC says the 33-year-old inmate has been identified as Tyler Damien Van Basten, who had been serving a prison term of three years, 11 months and 18 days since January 29, 2024.
Van Basten’s next of kin have been notified about his passing.
