CLEVELAND (AP) — Lane Thomas hit a grand slam off Tarik Skubal and Cleveland beat the Detroit Tigers 7-3 on Saturday in Game 5 of their AL Division Series, moving the Guardians into another postseason matchup against the Yankees.
Cleveland will meet New York in the ALCS, setting up a series between two teams that have crossed paths six previous times in October. They last met in 2022, with the Yankees taking their ALDS in five games.
Game 1 is Monday in the Bronx.

RCMP responded to over 400 calls intimate partner violence last year in Mission
MISSION – Amid a campaign to raise awareness of intimate partner violence, Mission RCMP revealed they received 418 calls related to domestic incidents last year.
A week after the launch of the 13th annual Purple Light Nights campaign recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the detachment said all of the calls involved someone who was hurt, felt unsafe, or needed help.Not every call involved physical violence, according to Mission RCMP Victim Services.

LONDON (AP) — Alex Salmond, the former first minister of Scotland who for decades championed Scotland’s independence from the U.K., has died. He was 69.
Anas Sarwar, leader of Scottish Labour, on Saturday confirmed Salmond’s death and said Salmond was a “central figure in politics for over three decades.”
Salmond, as then leader of the Scottish National Party, led the independence campaign in the referendum in 2014, but lost, gaining 45% of the vote.

OTTAWA — Trade Minister Mary Ng says she has full confidence in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as word began to spread late Friday about a growing revolt against his leadership within the Liberal caucus.

WHITEHORSE — The Yukon government says mercury levels that “exceeded the water quality objective” were found in a creek near the site where a mine’s ore containment facility failed, causing a torrent of cyanide-contaminated rock to escape in June.
