PUERTO DE ANCARES, Spain (AP-CP) — Canada’s Michael Woods won the mountainous 13th stage of the Spanish Vuelta on Friday, while Primoz Roglic took another bite out of the race lead held by Ben O’Connor.
Woods dropped the other breakaway riders and finished the 176-kilometre (109-mile) route from Lugo to a category-one finish at Puerto de Ancares 45 seconds ahead of runner-up Mauro Schmid.
It was the third career win at the Vuelta for the cyclist from Ottawa.

The British Columbia Coroners Service says at least 192 people died in July in the province due to unregulated drug toxicity, down 15 per cent from the same month last year.

MONTREAL — About 2,500 workers at 22 hotels in some of Quebec’s biggest cities have launched a one-day strike to protest an impasse in contract talks.
The walkout at hotels in Montreal, Quebec City and Sherbrooke is the second time since Aug. 8 that workers represented by the CSN-affiliated Fédération du commerce have gone on strike at the same time for a 24-hour period.

VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Art Gallery says the construction cost of its planned new home has jumped from an original estimate of $400 million to $600 million, forcing a redesign.

One killed in Friday morning crash in Abbotsford
ABBOTSFORD — A 42-year-old man has died following a single-vehicle collision early Friday morning at the intersection of Mt. Lehman Road and Marshall Road Extension in Abbotsford.
Abbotsford Police Department (AbbyPD) officers responded to the scene at approximately 6:53 a.m. after receiving reports of a crash. Upon arrival, they discovered a pickup truck in a ditch. The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, appeared to have sustained life-threatening injuries.
