TORONTO — The King’s Plate has been cancelled.
Woodbine Entertainment made the announcement Saturday on X, formerly known as Twitter, pointing to the weather as the reason.
“In the interest of safety for our horses and horse people, Woodbine Entertainment has cancelled the remainder of Saturday’s live racing card due to unsafe racing conditions caused by heavy rains in the Greater Toronto Area,” the statement said.

Jasper wildfire no longer out-of-control, now classified as ‘being held’
JASPER, ALTA. — Parks Canada says a wildfire that forced everyone to flee the Alberta town of Jasper and destroyed close to a third of its buildings is no longer classified as out-of-control and is now listed as “being held.”
The agency issued a statement saying that means the fire is not currently expected to spread into any priority areas.

SICAMOUS, B.C. — Mounties say a man has been charged more than a year after a body was found on a rural property in south central B.C.
A statement from police says the body of Wayne Sirvio was discovered at a home in Sicamous on Aug. 5, 2023, three days after he was reported missing.

Cultus Lake firefighter critically hurt in e-scooter accident
CHILLIWACK — A dedicated firefighter and training captain with the Cultus Lake Fire Department is in critical condition following what a GoFundMe page describes as a “horrific accident” Thursday night.

Pharmacist blamed for deaths in US meningitis outbreak will plead no contest in Michigan case
DETROIT (AP) — A Massachusetts pharmacist charged with murder in the deaths of 11 Michigan residents from a 2012 U.S. meningitis outbreak has agreed to plead no contest to involuntary manslaughter, according to an email sent to families and obtained Friday by The Associated Press.

CP NewsAlert: Four found dead in homicide investigation in McCreary, Manitoba
WINNIPEG — Mounties in Manitoba say they are investigating four deaths in and around the small community of McCreary, northwest of Winnipeg.
RCMP Staff Sgt. Richard Sherring says around 10 a.m. today, officers acting on a tip found the body of a 41 year-old man on a road who had died from a self-inflicted injury.
Based on that find, they went to a nearby home where they found the bodies of a 36-year-old woman, and two men, aged 35 and 65.
Those deaths are being investigated as homicides.
