CHILLIWACK — Despite a fierce lightning storm that delivered 108 strikes in the Coastal Fire Centre Sunday (Aug. 12), the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) reports that only five new wildfires were spotted in the eastern section of the Coastal Fire Centre, and none are threatening structures or infrastructure.
As of Monday afternoon, the BCWS reports two fires burning out of control in the vicinity of Chilliwack.

OTTAWA — Human-caused climate change is making heat waves much more likely, the federal government says, bringing extreme weather from fires to storms.

CBC paid more than $18 million in bonuses in 2024 after eliminating hundreds of jobs
OTTAWA — The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. paid $18.4 million in bonuses this year after hundreds of jobs at the public broadcaster were eliminated.Documents obtained through access-to-information laws show CBC/Radio-Canada paid out bonuses to 1,194 employees for the 2023-24 fiscal year.

Mission axe attack sends one to hospital
MISSION — A 32-year-old man is recovering from serious injuries after being assaulted with axes outside a homeless shelter on Logan Avenue in Mission on the evening of August 1.
