VICTORIA — The Ministry of the Attorney General has announced a new leader for the province’s police watchdog.
It says Jessica Berglund has been appointed to the position of chief civilian director of B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office by Attorney General Niki Sharma.
The announcement comes following the retirement of Ronald J. MacDonald, who served in the role for seven years.

RCMP officer in Langley injured in hit and run
LANGLEY — A Langley RCMP officer was injured in a hit-and-run collision on Friday (Aug. 9) morning while conducting traffic enforcement in the 5000 block of 208 Street.
In a news release, RCMP says the incident occurred at approximately 11:20 a.m. The suspect vehicle fled the scene, heading northbound on 208 Street. The officer sustained what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment.

MISSION — The provincial government is advising drivers of an upcoming lane closure on Highway 7 between Murray and Stave Lake streets as construction continues to improve the commercial truck route through Mission.

The number of active wildfires in British Columbia is increasing after holding below 350 for days as officials warn of lightning in the forecast.
There are just under 360 active blazes in B.C., including 25 sparked since Thursday as many areas in the southern part of the province bake under hot and dry conditions.
The BC Wildfire Service says there’s a significant chance of lightning in the southern Interior and crews were bracing for new starts and intensifying fire behaviour.

SURREY — Surrey RCMP have identified the suspect involved in an attempted murder that occurred in Whalley on August 2. The suspect, 33-year-old Kalid Yimer, is described as 5’6” tall, with dark hair, brown eyes, and a medium build.
