VANCOUVER — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made an unscheduled stop today at Vancouver’s Pride festivities but did not walk in the annual downtown parade.
Trudeau walked a block in city’s West End before the event’s official start.
The prime minister stopped to shake hands and take selfies with people gathering for the parade.
Shouts of “free Palestine” could be heard from the parade crowd, but many people appeared largely pleased to see Trudeau.

VICTORIA — Authorities issued an evacuation order Saturday night for 16 properties in a rural area south of Princeton, B.C., because of the out-of-control Calcite Creek wildfire.

Off-duty Toronto police officer shot in leg by man wanted on Canada-wide warrant
TORONTO — An off-duty Toronto police officer was shot Saturday night in the leg after he recognized a man wanted for murder.
Toronto police say the off-duty officer called for backup and a chase ensued between the suspect and uniformed officers, at which point a shot was fired around King and Bathurst streets.

Sanford takes home bronze in Olympic men’s 63.5-kilogram boxing
PARIS — Canada’s Wyatt Sanford has taken home a bronze medal in Olympic men’s boxing after falling to France’s Sofiane Oumiha in the semifinals of the 63.5-kilogram category.
The judges scored the match 4-1 in favour of Oumiha.
There are two bronze medals in boxing, meaning those who made it to the semifinals are guaranteed a spot on the podium.
