Paul Cottrell, the pacific marine mammal coordinator with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, says efforts to coax the animal out of the lagoon on Thursday failed, and officials and local First Nations are “monitoring and assessing” the animal from afar this weekend.

Tony Finau matches his career low and sets the target at the Houston Open
HOUSTON (AP) — Tony Finau matched his career low on the PGA Tour with an 8-under 62 on Friday, setting a daunting target for the rest of the field as he tries to win back-to-back in the Houston Open.
Finau spent time after his opening round to work on his putting with coach Boyd Summerhays, and it paid off in a big way. He holed four putts from about 25 feet or longer, and he chipped in from 40 feet for eagle on the par-5 eighth.
Finau narrowly missed a 15-footer on his last hole at the pa -

Canada’s coal exports up again in 2023 as government’s promised ban elusive
OTTAWA — Canadian exports of thermal coal increased another seven per cent last year, reaching the highest level in almost a decade.
The boom in exports of the kind of coal burned to make electricity comes as Canada leads a charge to end the use of coal as a source of power worldwide.
The Liberals also promised three years ago that all thermal coal exports will stop from Canada by 2030, but exports have risen almost 20 per cent since that promise was made.

Endangered North Atlantic right whales lose three of 19 calves this season
FREDERICTON — An international environmental organization says it is concerning that at least three of the 19 North Atlantic right whale calves born this season have died this year.
Oceana Canada campaign director Kim Elmslie says there should be between 25 and 30 new calves so far, noting the total local whale population of 360 contains about 70 reproducing females.
She says the main threats facing endangered North Atlantic right whales include hazards from fishing gear and ship strikes. -

‘Ozempig’ remains Minnesota baseball team’s mascot despite uproar that name is form of fat-shaming
For a Minnesota minor league baseball team known for a history of outlandish promotions, the idea of naming its longtime live pig mascot after the weight loss drug Ozempic made perfect sense.
The St. Paul Saints quickly found out that not everyone was amused by the pig’s name, Ozempig, or the team’s posting of a backstory about the pig’s embarrassment at gaining weight and promise to try to remain trim.
Almost immediately after the team announced the name this week ahead of Sat -

Toronto FC coach John Herdman says Italian star Lorenzo Insigne is expected to miss six weeks with a hamstring injury.
A distraught Insigne hobbled off in first-half stoppage time of last Saturday’s 2-0 win over visiting Atlanta, trying not to put weight on his right leg, after pulling up in the Atlanta penalty box on what seemed an innocuous play.
Herdman said experts in Canada, England and Italy had studied Insigne’s MRI, calling the news “a huge blow for us.”
