NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball has opened a formal investigation into illegal gambling and theft allegations involving Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara.
Mizuhara was let go from the team Wednesday following reports from the Los Angeles Times and ESPN about his alleged ties to an illegal bookmaker.

Maritime body approves new protections for shipping in Canadian Arctic
The international body that regulates shipping is approving new environmental protections for the Canadian Arctic.

Port of Vancouver boasts record cargo volume, despite strike and cooling economy
VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority says record cargo volume rolled through its terminals last year, despite a sputtering global economy and a big drop in container shipments.

HAWKESBURY, Ont. — Ontario Provincial Police and Montreal police say they’ve arrested 31 people in Quebec with outstanding warrants for car thefts and other serious crimes in Ontario.
The arrests are part of Project Volcano, an operation by Ontario and Quebec police forces that took place over three days this week in the greater Montreal area.

TERREBONNE, Que. — Quebec provincial police say one man is dead and another badly injured after a brawl at a strip club in Terrebonne, Que., just north of Montreal.

Ultra-endurance athlete Nick Pelletier knew the Hawaiian channel he planned to swim had plenty of sharks, but he should have been worried about the jellyfish.
Pelletier, who’s from Kelowna, B.C., flew to Hawaii last week for an attempt to swim across the Molokai Channel, a 41-kilometre stretch between the Hawaiian Islands of Molokai and Oahu.
