Night once brought firefighting reprieve, but no longer, Canadian study shows
The darkness of night has traditionally signalled reprieve for wildland firefighters, but a new Canadian study shows that’s changing, and drought is the driving force.
The availability of bone-dry fuels is the key mechanism promoting extreme fire behaviour and growth at night, the study says, though warming temperatures are also eroding the “climatological barrier” that has typically limited overnight burning.
Uncovering the role of drought led the researchers to further show t -

Unprecedented deficits, soaring debt, and nothing to show for it — this is the alarming reality of life in B.C. under the NDP.
The 2024 budget unveiled by British Columbia’s NDP government is a clear illustration of their misguided priorities and fiscal mismanagement. ‘Look out for yourself’: How some NHLers have taken more ownership over their careers
Jack Eichel needed a change of scenery. Matthew Tkachuk felt the same.
Auston Matthews, meanwhile, was happy to sign on the dotted line for the next four seasons, just not seven or eight.
Unlike the other major North American sports — the NBA, NFL and MLB — where athletes have historically been more vocal in pushing their own interests, hockey players have, in general, toed more of the company line.

Returns from Tommy John surgery may seem routine. Recovery can be full of grief, angst and isolation
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — One August morning in 2022 while all alone at the Oakland Coliseum, Daulton Jefferies plopped down in the grass and wept.
The pitcher cried for a good 45 minutes. Six years after becoming a first-round draft pick and days after his 27th birthday, he contemplated giving up baseball altogether — a first for him, in spite of multiple injury roadblocks.
Jefferies made eight starts for the Athletics that season and knew his right elbow had something seriously wrong -
50 years later, Tommy John surgery remains a game-changer
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — There is a bridge that runs from Tommy John and Dr. Frank Jobe in 1974, all the way to Shohei Ohtani, Justin Verlander and Bryce Harper. A thread that connects an increasing number of baseball’s biggest stars. Mostly on the mound, but at the plate, too.
An operation that changed everything.
Almost 50 years ago, on Sept. 25, 1974, Jobe reconstructed a torn ulnar collateral ligament in John’s left arm. It was a pioneering achievement for Jobe and a lifeline -
