WINNIPEG — A flight from Vancouver to Toronto made an unscheduled stop after a passenger attempted to open a door.
WestJet says in an email that Flight 710 diverted to Winnipeg after the incident on Friday.
The airline says that as per standard protocol, it contacted RCMP and EMS to meet the aircraft upon arrival in Winnipeg and the passenger was taken into their custody.
RCMP say an 18-year-old man from Victoria, B.C., is charged with endangering an aircraft under the Aeronatics Act.

Explosion at Virginia home kills 1 firefighter and hospitalizes 9 firefighters and 2 civilians
STERLING, Va. (AP) — One firefighter was killed and nine others were injured when an explosion in a Washington, D.C., suburb on Friday leveled a home where they were investigating a gas leak. Two civilians were also injured.
The firefighters were called to the home in Sterling, Virginia, by a report of a gas smell shortly after 7:30 p.m. and a fiery explosion took place about 30 minutes later, fire officials said.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana guard Bennedict Mathurin put on a show for Pacers fans Friday night, earning the Rising Stars MVP award after scoring 13 points in a 26-13 victory in the championship game.
San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama didn’t make it that far. Despite scoring 11 points, his team was eliminated in the second game.

Cantlay leads by 5 shots over Hughes at Riviera, Woods makes early exit
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Patrick Cantlay began with an eagle and never let anyone close to him the rest of the round Friday. He shot a 6-under 65 to build a five-shot lead at the Genesis Invitational going into a weekend that won’t include Tiger Woods.
Woods made another early exit, this one because of flu symptoms instead of his injured body. He withdrew after six holes and spent the next two hours getting intravenous fluids before leaving Riviera, along with a big chunk of the gallery.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine’s military chief said early Saturday that he’s withdrawing troops from Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine, where they’ve battled a Russian assault for four months.
In a short statement posted on Facebook early Saturday, Oleksandr Syrskyi said he had made the decision to avoid encirclement and “preserve the lives and health of servicemen”.

Japan has launched its flagship H3 rocket in aclosely-watched 2nd test after failed debut last year
TOKYO (AP) — A new Japanese flagship H3 rocket lifted off from a space station in southwestern Japan on Saturday in a key second test flight a year after its failed debut launch.
The H3 rocket blasted off from a launch pad at the Tanegashima Space Center two days after its originally scheduled liftoff which was delayed due to bad weather.
