SANTIAGO — Charles Philibert-Thiboutot won Canada’s first track and field gold medal of the Pan American Games on Thursday with his victory in the men’s 1,500 metres.
And his effort was shortly followed up with another gold from Sarah Mitton in the women’s shot put.
The 32-year-old Philibert-Thiboutot from Quebec City strained at the finish line and fell crossing it to edge his Canadian teammate Robert Heppenstall.
Philibert-Thiboutot’s time was three minutes 39.74

Family and friends of Elias Whitehead, along with First Nations leaders in Manitoba and Ontario, held a news conference Thursday calling for changes to how police approach wellness checks. They also voiced concern about the force Winnipeg officers used while taking the 37-year-old into custody last month.

House approves $14.5 billion in assistance for Israel as Biden vows to veto the GOP’s approach
WASHINGTON (AP) — The House approved $14.5 billion in military aid Thursday for Israel, a muscular U.S. response to the war with Hamas but also a partisan approach by new Speaker Mike Johnson that poses a direct challenge to Democrats and President Joe Biden.
In a departure from norms, Johnson’s package required that the emergency aid be offset with cuts in government spending elsewhere. That tack established the new House GOP’s conservative leadership, but it also turned what -

Heralded Canadian filly Moira chasing Breeders’ Cup success
ARCADIA, Calif. — He’s won the King’s Plate, Woodbine Oaks and Prince of Wales Stakes but a Breeders’ Cup victory would be a crowning achievement for Canadian trainer Kevin Attard.
“Being Canadian, the King’s Plate means a lot,” Attard said. “But if you get lucky enough to win a Breeders’ Cup, that might surpass the Plate just because you’re on a world stage.

OTTAWA — The New Democrats say they will back the Conservatives on a motion to pull the carbon price off all home heating until after the next election.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre tabled the motion today, insisting the government’s decision last week to temporarily pause carbon pricing for home heating oil for three years is a divisive policy to save Liberal seats in Atlantic Canada.
The Liberals say the pause helps Canadians across the country, with a majority of home heat -

Death of a player from a skate to the neck reignites hockey’s stubborn debate over protective gear
It took the NHL until 1979 to mandate helmets and goalie masks for new players. It wasn’t until 2013 that eye-protecting visors became mandatory — grandfathered in for veterans, of course. A handful of players still don’t wear them.
Broken jaws, smashed noses and concussions haven’t led to full face shields or cages in professional men’s hockey at any level, either. This week, the death of an American player from a skate blade to the neck during a game in England ha -
