OTTAWA — Franchise legend Daniel Alfredsson has made his long-awaited return to the Ottawa Senators.
Team president of hockey operations Steve Staios announced Friday that Alfredsson is joining the team in an as-yet unspecified role.
“He’ll operate somewhere between coaching and player development both on and off the ice and we will see how the role evolves,” the team said in a release.
Alfredsson joined the Senators on the ice for practice on Friday.

Maple Leafs take positives from sloppy season-opening victory
TORONTO — Sheldon Keefe left Scotiabank Arena pleased with the result.

Rare eclipse due Saturday over western B.C., but clouds could block the show
VANCOUVER — Western British Columbia will be the best place in Canada to view a rare annular solar eclipse set to happen Saturday, but cloudy skies could obscure the phenomenon for many viewers.
An annular solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and sun, and because it happens when the sun is at its farthest point from Earth, viewers are treated to a bright halo surrounding the black blot of the moon.

Former world champion Philip Kim says the move to drop breaking from the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles is disappointing, especially before the sport debuts at next year’s Paris Games.
Each host city, under International Olympic Committee rules, can request the inclusion of several sports for its edition of the Games. There is no guarantee they will stick, however.
