GUIDONIA MONTECELIO, Italy (AP) — European captain Luke Donald was delivering his Ryder Cup victory speech in front of a giddy crowd at Marco Simone when his celebrating players standing beside him started a chant that quickly swept through the grandstands.
“Two more years” was the cry — seemingly led by Rory McIlroy — which drew a broad smile from Donald.
As the party continued into the night in Rome, Donald tempered any talk of him staying on as captain after orch

Mets and Yankees wrap up nightmare New York seasons, head into uncertain winter
NEW YORK (AP) — For the first time in nine years, baseball’s post-season won’t include a New York team.
Neither one even came close, really.
Back in March, such a monumental flop by the Mets and Yankees would’ve been difficult to envision. After combining for 200 regular-season wins in 2022, both clubs were coming off playoff appearances and both added big-name talent in the offseason.
With stars like Aaron Judge and Justin Verlander on each side of town — not -
Blue Jays right-hander Kevin Gausman to start Game 1 against Twins
MINNEAPOLIS — Blue Jays right-hander Kevin Gausman will get the start for Game 1 of Toronto’s wild-card series against the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday.
Gausman was originally tabbed to pitch in Sunday’s regular-season finale against Tampa Bay, but the start was pushed back when Toronto clinched a playoff spot Saturday night.
The Twins have tabbed right-hander Pablo Lopez for the opener of the best-of-three series.
Gausman was 12-9 with a 3.16 earned-run average this season. He h -

Insigne apologizes after verbal altercation with disgruntled fans at Toronto FC game
TORONTO — Frustration over Toronto FC’s dismal season boiled over Saturday night with fans getting into a verbal altercation with injured Italian star Lorenzo Insigne.
It seems most everyone involved behaved badly. Although one can perhaps cut Insigne some slack given his young sons were present and distressed at the abuse coming their father’s way.
On Monday, Insigne apologized for the way he reacted. But he also said that while he understands the fans’ frustration at a -
Grizzly sow, two older cubs trapped and relocated after moving into Nelson, B.C.
NELSON, B.C. — A female grizzly bear and her two older cubs have been trapped and relocated after frequenting areas around Nelson in southeastern British Columbia.
Lisa Thomson, the regional co-ordinator with conservation charity WildSafeBC, says the trio was spotted about a week ago and had begun moving closer to town.
She says it was “super unusual” because grizzlies prefer to be in the mountains, but they may have been attracted to an abundance of fruit left hanging on -
UN Security Council approves sending a Kenya-led force to Haiti to fight violent gangs
Associated Press (AP) — The U.N. Security Council voted Monday to send a multinational force to Haiti led by Kenya to help combat violent gangs in the troubled Caribbean country.
The resolution drafted by the U.S. was approved with 13 votes in favor and two abstentions.
The resolution authorizes the force to deploy for one year, with a review after nine months. It would mark the first time a force is deployed to Haiti since a U.N.-approved mission nearly 20 years ago.

Ex-MLB pitcher Trevor Bauer, woman who accused him of assault in 2021, settle legal dispute
Former major league pitcher Trevor Bauer and a woman who accused him of beating and sexually assaulting her in 2021 have settled their legal dispute, Bauer’s attorneys said Monday.
“Both of their respective claims have been withdrawn with prejudice, effective today,” attorneys Jon Fetterolf and Shawn Holley said in a statement.
The former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher was placed on administrative leave by MLB in July 2021 after the allegations were made by the woman, who said Bau -
Rugby World Cup largely predictable so far, but final pool games may offer a few twists
Outside of Fiji’s rise and Australia’s demise, the first 3 1/2 weeks of the Rugby World Cup have been, in a large sense, predictable.
Yet none out of the big four of top-ranked Ireland, new No. 2 France and the southern hemisphere powers of South Africa and New Zealand are guaranteed a place in the quarterfinals heading into the final set of pool matches starting on Thursday and running through to Sunday.
Wales and England — which no one gave much thought to — are the onl -

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Trevor Zegras and the Anaheim Ducks agreed to a contract extension Monday, keeping their dynamic centre in the fold for at least three more seasons.
Zegras’ extension is worth US$17.25 million, with an annual salary cap hit of $5.75 million. He was a restricted free agent.
The 22-year old Zegras had a team-high 65 points last season, becoming the third-youngest NHL player to lead his team in points. He set a career high in assists with 42 and matched his person -
David Stearns introduced as president of baseball operations by New York Mets, his hometown team
NEW YORK (AP) — David Stearns was formally appointed the first president of baseball operations in New York Mets history Monday, taking over the hometown team he cheered for as a child.
The former Milwaukee Brewers boss was introduced by owner Steve Cohen at a Citi Field news conference on the heels of a hugely disappointing season. Despite championship aspirations and a record $355 million payroll on opening day, New York dropped out of playoff contention by midsummer and finished fourth -
Mohawk Mothers worry evidence of human remains at McGill work site will be destroyed
MONTREAL — Indigenous women say they are worried potential evidence of human remains at the site of a former Montreal hospital will be destroyed if construction isn’t halted.
The women, who call themselves the Mohawk Mothers, lost their bid for a court order last month to stop excavation on part of the site where McGill University is expanding its downtown campus.
A spokeswoman for the group says workers could destroy evidence because they want to move material – without siftin -

Veteran CFL linebacker Lawrence putting together solid 2023 campaign
HAMILTON — Simoni Lawrence is back doing what he does best with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Injuries last year limited Lawrence to 10 games and 45 defensive tackles — both career lows over his 10 seasons in Hamilton. But the gregarious linebacker is putting together a solid ’23 campaign, having appeared in all 15 of the Ticats’ regular-season games and registering 72 defensive tackles, second on the team behind Jameer Thurman (79).

A look at how to avoid a bear encounter after fatal attack in Banff National Park
BANFF, Alta. — A couple and their dog were killed on the weekend in a grizzly bear attack in the wilderness of Banff National Park in Alberta. Here’s a look at how to avoid an encounter in bear country:
Make noise: Call out, clap, sing or talk loudly near streams, dense forest or berry patches, on windy days or in areas of low visibility.
Watch for fresh bear signs: Tracks, droppings, diggings, torn-up logs, turned-over rocks or a large dead animal could all be signs that a bear has -

Diwali fireworks advisory issued despite warnings it might be discriminatory: emails
OTTAWA — An Environment Canada advisory that singled out Diwali fireworks as a reason to prepare for poor air quality last October was issued despite multiple warnings from some staff about it being discriminatory.

Defence Minister Bill Blair said last week that he hasn’t received a new mandate letter and is acting on the list of commitments that Trudeau assigned to his predecessor in December 2021, three months after that year’s election.
Trudeau’s government has assigned new tasks to the military in recent months, while aski -
