TORONTO — He’s currently an NFL free agent but Jordan Ta’amu isn’t necessarily out of pro football options.
On Friday, the Saskatchewan Roughriders revealed the reigning XFL most valuable player as one of 10 on their 45-man negotiation list. That gives the club exclusive rights to Ta’amu should he decided to play football in Canada.
Since 2018, CFL teams have unveiled 10 players from their negotiation twice a year – September and December.

VANCOUVER — British Columbia’s prolonged drought risks damaging the salmon population for generations and has led to a series of emergency, rapidly deployed projects in an effort to intervene.

VICTORIA — The Correctional Service of Canada says an inmate serving a sentence for second-degree murder has died at the Victoria-area William Head Institution.
A statement Friday says inmate Richard Paul Preston died on Saturday while in custody at the minimum-security federal institution.

NEW YORK — Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and partner Erin Routliffe will play for the women’s doubles championship at the U.S. Open.
The pair advanced to the final with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) semifinal win over the eighth-seeded duo of Taiwan’s Su-Wei Hsieh and China’s Xinyu Wang on Friday.
Dabrowski and Routliffe won 62 per cent of their first serves and converted seven of nine breakpoint opportunities.

COVID-19 numbers spike in B.C. but no more cases of new variant are detected
VANCOUVER — British Columbia is experiencing a spike in COVID-19 numbers, with cases, test positivity, hospitalizations and deaths all up in recent weeks.
The BC Centre for Disease Control says in a monthly report that 447 people tested positive in tests funded by the province’s medical services plan in the week ending Sept. 2, more than triple the 133 cases in the week ending Aug. 12.
Positivity doubled to about 18 per cent in the same period.

OTTAWA — The Canadian economy added more jobs than expected in August, but most forecasters still believe the Bank of Canada is done raising interest rates as overall trends in the economy point to a slowdown.
Statistics Canada reported Friday the economy added 40,000 jobs last month — double the consensus expectation from economists.
The employment gain was just enough for the jobless rate to hold steady at 5.5 per cent, ending a three-month streak of rising unemployment.

TORONTO — In a change from last year, the Toronto Blue Jays’ radio rights-holder will not resume in-person broadcasts of road games as the team enters the playoff stretch drive.
