LONGUEUIL, Que. — A Quebec Superior Court judge has ruled that a city south of Montreal can proceed with a plan to cull most of the white-tailed deer that have overrun a local park.
Justice Bernard Jolin said Longueuil, Que., can move forward with a controlled crossbow hunt that would cut the deer population at Michel-Chartrand Park from more than 100 down to about 20.

A 911 call about a car driving with a cow inside it in one of northeast Nebraska’s biggest cities was no bull.
Norfolk Police Capt. Chad Reiman said it didn’t take long for officers to track down the modified Ford Crown Victoria sedan with a bull riding shotgun on the main highway entering the city of roughly 24,000 Wednesday morning.“We didn’t have a full understanding of it until we saw it,” Reiman said.

NEW WESTMINSTER, B.C. — A man who killed a woman and wounded six other people in a mass stabbing at a library in North Vancouver, B.C., has received a life sentence with no chance of parole for 15 years.

B.C. officer who assaulted UBC nursing student receives conditional discharge
KELOWNA, B.C. — The BC Prosecution Service has confirmed a Mountie who pleaded guilty to assaulting a University of British Columbia student during a wellness check in Kelowna has received a conditional discharge and was placed on probation for two years.

VICTORIA — British Columbia Premier David Eby is calling on the Bank of Canada to halt further interest rate hikes.

Rain across B.C. Interior aids wildfire fight in Okanagan, Shuswap and Fraser Canyon
Widespread rain in the forecast today throughout much of British Columbia’s southern Interior is expected to aid firefighters pushing back against a number of major wildfires in the region.

Mission Municipal Forest reopens ahead of long weekend after cooler weather, rainfall
MISSION — After being shuttered for the past week due to the increasing risk of wildfire, the City of Mission says Mission Municipal Forest will reopen to the public because of recent cooler temperatures and rainfall.

MONTREAL — The director of a Montreal supervised drug-consumption site says the city saw a record number of drug-related deaths in the last year.
CACTUS Montréal executive director Jean-François Mary made the comments in reaction to new data released today by the city’s public health authority.

VANCOUVER — Joffre Lakes Park will reopen Labour Day weekend after public access was shut down by two First Nations in British Columbia last week.
