MONTREAL — A former Montreal primary school teacher has been sentenced to eight years in prison for sexually abusing five young girls.
Quebec court Judge Mélanie Hébert says Dominic Blanchette was in a position of authority and trust when he abused the victims, some of whom were as young as 10.
She says the 29-year-old was aware of the consequences of the abuse he committed between September 2017 and May 2022.
Blanchette pleaded guilty in March on eight counts, including sexu

TORONTO — The Toronto Raptors will open the NBA’s inaugural in-season tournament against the Boston Celtics at Scotiabank Arena.
Toronto is in East Group C with the Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, Chicago Bulls and Orlando Magic.

COVID-19 infections may be slowly starting to rise again in Canada, new data from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) suggests.
“There are signs of continued fluctuations in some COVID-19 activity indicators after a long period of gradual decline,” the agency’s online epidemiology update said on Tuesday.
“This may be an early sign of increases in activity.”

TORONTO — A stellar relief effort earned Dru Brown of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers the top quarterback grade in the CFL’s weekly honour roll.
Brown received a score of 89.4 after relieving an injured Zach Collaros in Winnipeg’s 38-29 comeback win over the Edmonton Elks. Brown threw for 307 yards and four touchdowns in the contest.
