Parti Québécois announces death of former minister Jacques-Yvan Morin
MONTREAL — The Parti Québécois says Jacques-Yvan Morin, who held several prominent cabinet roles and served for a time as the head of the official opposition in the province, has died. He was 92.The party did not indicate the date of morin’s death, but media reports say he died on July 26.

Environment Canada issues heat warning for Chilliwack, Abbotsford
VANCOUVER — Environment Canada says the Fraser Valley will be subject to a prolonged heat wave, issuing a heat warning for the region.
The national weather agency says a strong ridge of high pressure is moving over the region this weekend and will remain in place through much of the week.
It says daytime temperatures are expected to reach 33 degrees throughout the Fraser Valley. Temperatures will remain warm overnight, dipping down to just 17.

Death toll rises to 80 in Maui wildfires as survivors begin returning to communities in ruins
LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — The death toll has risen to 80 as a result of the wildfires that decimated parts of the island of Maui this past week, officials in Hawaii said Friday.
The number of confirmed fatalities in the 9 p.m. announcement by the County of Maui increased from the previous figure of 67.

VANCOUVER — Nanaimo resident Rick Butzelaar bought an electric vehicle less than two months ago and the savings so far have been significant, but he doesn’t have a home charger and a recent bid by BC Hydro to increase public charging rates has him concerned.
The provincial Crown corporation wants to raise rates at public electric vehicle charging stations by 15 per cent from Sept. 1, which the company says would allow it to recover the costs of providing them over 10 years.

ABBOTSFORD — Witnesses are being sought to determine how a fire was started Friday (Aug. 11) around midnight in Abbotsford.
In a social media message, Abbotsford Police say emergency crews were called to attend a fire that had broken out in the 31000 block of Wagner Drive.
