CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack RCMP are investigating an assault with a deadly weapon that happened over the weekend in downtown Chilliwack on Yale Road outside a 7-Eleven convenience store.
According to a statement from the Chilliwack RCMP, Sgt. Krista Vrolyk says Mounties were dispatched to the 46200 block of Yale Road at about 3 a.m. on Saturday, July 15 for the report of an assault with a weapon.

MONTREAL — Researchers at Western University say two tornadoes struck southern Quebec during a major thunderstorm last week.
The Northern Tornadoes Project says it found evidence of a weak tornado near St-Thomas, Que., northeast of Montreal, including a telltale track through crops.
In a blog post, the researchers say the July 13 tornado, which was given the lowest tornado intensity rating, caused damage to trees and two barns, as well as minor damage to a home.

PHOENIX — A tornado heavily damaged a large Pfizer pharmaceutical plant in North Carolina on Wednesday, scattering medicine and other debris around the complex, a sheriff and the company said.
Pharmaceutical company Pfizer confirmed in an email that the large complex was damaged by a twister that tore through the Rocky Mount area, but it reported no serious injuries. “We are assessing the situation to determine the impact on production,” the company said.

Stanford University president announces resignation over concerns about his research
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The president of Stanford University said Wednesday he would resign, citing an independent review that cleared him of research misconduct but found flaws in some papers he authored.
Marc Tessier-Lavigne said in a statement to students and staff that he would step down August 31.
The resignation comes after the board of trustees launched a review in December following allegations he engaged in fraud and other unethical conduct related to his research and papers.

MONTREAL — A Quebec Superior Court judge has signed off on a sex abuse class-action settlement involving the Montreal archdiocese.
The agreement, announced earlier this year, includes a minimum $14.8 million in compensation for victims of sexual abuse committed by diocesan priests and lay employees of the archdiocese since 1940.

Montreal traffic control worker dies several days after hit-and-run at worksite
MONTREAL — The traffic control worker seriously injured last week in a hit-and-run at a roadwork site in Montreal’s east end has died.
Montreal police say the 39-year-old man died on Monday.
He was sent to hospital in critical condition after a vehicle drove into the roadwork site near the intersection of Industriel and Saint-Jean-Baptiste boulevards at around 10:20 p.m. on July 12.
