TORONTO — The Toronto Maple Leafs added enforcer Ryan Reaves as NHL free agency opened on Saturday.
They also watched two defencemen walk out the door.
Toronto signed Reaves to a three-year contract worth US$4.05 million, the team announced on Saturday, adding some size and physicality to their lineup.
The six-foot-two, 225-pound Reaves produced five goals and 10 assists in 73 games split between the New York Rangers and Minnesota Wild last season.

Smog, air quality alerts in place across much of Quebec as wildfires continue to burn
MONTREAL — Environment Canada has issued a smog warning for a large part of Quebec as forest fires continue to burn in the provinces northwest.
The federal department says smog can be expected in the northwestern Abitibi-Témiscamingue region, as well as in a large area stretching from Gatineau, Que., near Ottawa, to the province’s eastern border with the state of Maine.
That area includes Montreal, which has experienced several smog days this week, and Quebec City.

James Wade leaving WNBA’s Chicago Sky to join Toronto Raptors as assistant coach
TORONTO — The Chicago Sky say head coach and general manager James Wade is joining the Toronto Raptors as an assistant coach.
Wade led Chicago to its first Women’s National Basketball Association title in 2021 and compiled an 81-59 record since taking the top job in 2019.
He’s previously coached with the San Antonio Stars and Minnesota Lynx.
Chicago says Wade will be replaced by Emre Vatansever as interim general manager and head coach.

Edmonton Oilers signing reunites Brown with McDavid
EDMONTON — The Edmonton Oilers reunited winger Connor Brown with his junior teammate Connor McDavid by signing Brown to a one-year contract Saturday.
The 29-year-old Brown from Toronto played just the first four games for the Washington Capitals this past season because of a knee injury sustained Oct. 17.
He underwent season-ending surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Brown scored 90 goals and has 126 assists in 448 career NHL games with Washington, Ottawa and Toronto.

OTTAWA — The Ottawa Senators have signed two young players ahead of next season.
Defenceman Erik Brannstrom agreed to a one-year deal, while fellow blueliner Jacob Bernard-Docker has signed a two-year, US$1.61 million contract.
Brannstrom’s contract is for $2 million for the 2023-24 NHL season.

N.W.T. construction company fined $100K following worker’s death
FORT SIMPSON, N.W.T. — A construction company in the Northwest Territories has been fined $100,000 after a worker was killed at a site outside Fort Simpson in 2020.
