Happy to help Canada, but U.S. wildfire season is rapidly approaching, officials warn
WASHINGTON — The agency co-ordinating the deployment of U.S. firefighters and equipment to Canada says it is keeping a wary eye on its own looming fire season.
The U.S. National Interagency Fire Center says there are currently 345 federal firefighters and support personnel helping out north of the border.
A total of 649 U.S. personnel have been cycled through Canada since early May — but that number doesn’t include state-level resources that are also assisting.  -
B.C. to require licence for asbestos abatement contractors by 2024
VICTORIA — British Columbia will soon be the first jurisdiction in Canada to implement a licensing requirement for asbestos abatement contractors.
The Labour Ministry says workers must be licensed by Jan. 1.
This comes following changes to the Workers Compensation Act last year, requiring that contractors who remove the cancer-causing material use only trained and certified workers.
The ministry says required training for worker certification is scheduled to begin this summer.

HOPE — RCMP investigators are looking into a disturbing attack on the Pride community in Hope.
In a news release, RCMP say officers were called out to a 3 a.m. fire Thursday (Jun. 8) at a building on Wallace Avenue. Someone had broken the glass in the front window of the building and attempted to light a Pride flag on fire.With the assistance of firefighters, the fire was quickly doused, limiting the damage to the building.

Supreme Court mourns former justice Louis LeBel, who served 14 years on highest bench
OTTAWA — The Supreme Court of Canada is mourning former justice Louis LeBel after he died Thursday at the age of 83.
Former prime minister Jean Chrétien appointed LeBel to the country’s highest bench in 2000, where he served until his retirement in 2014.
Lebel received degrees from the Collège des Jésuites in Quebec City, Université Laval and the University of Toronto before being appointed to the Quebec Court of Appeal in 1984.

TROUT LAKE, N.W.T. — An out-of-control wildfire burning near Sambaa K’e, a small Dene community in the Northwest Territories, has destroyed two cabins.
The territory’s wildfire agency says the losses are believed to have occurred during explosive growth of the fire last week.

CFL players adjust to their bigger heads, helmet covers worn in practice
CALGARY — There are some big heads on CFL practice fields this season.
Players in four position groups were mandated to wear a product called Guardian Cap in training camp and padded practices. The cap is a soft-shell helmet cover designed to reduce the force of head impact.
