OTTAWA — Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has failed to persuade the House of Commons to condemn the Liberal government’s approach to fighting drug addiction.
In a vote of 209 to 113 today, MPs defeated a motion presented by Poilievre.

Northeastern B.C. wildfire grows as evacuations return north of Fort St. John
FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The British Columbia Wildfire Service says a blaze north of Fort St. John has grown significantly, forcing renewed evacuation orders and alerts.
The service website says the Donnie Creek wildfire charred an additional 275 square kilometres over the weekend.
The fire, approximately 160 kilometres north of Fort St. John, remains out of control and is estimated to have burned a total of 1,575 square kilometres of trees and bush since it was sparked by lightning on -

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) — A judge sentenced former El Salvador President Mauricio Funes to 14 years in prison Monday for negotiating with gangs during his administration.
Funes’ trial began in April with the former leader living in Nicaragua. El Salvador changed its laws last year to allow trials in absentia.

‘Tragic accident’ blamed for recent death of giraffe at Calgary Zoo
CALGARY — The Calgary Zoo says a “tragic accident” led to the recent death of one of its adult Masai giraffes.
A statement from the zoo says a female giraffe named Emara died May 19 after tangling one of her horns in a cable surrounding her enclosure.
The statement says a necropsy revealed Emara fell against the enclosure fence and died almost instantly of a broken neck.
Emara, who had just turned 12, came to Calgary from the San Diego Zoo in 2016.

ABBOTSFORD — Abbotsford police say a large transport truck has collided with an overpass in Abbotsford, closing the westbound land of Highway #1 at the Number 3 Road exit.The crash occurred around 6 a.m., just as the rush hour was beginning.

Vancouver police investigating fatal shooting linked to gang conflict
Vancouver police are investigating the death of a 28-year-old man in a shooting that investigators believe was related to gang conflict in the region.
Police say multiple people called to report the shooting outside a south Vancouver banquet hall near Fraser Street and Southeast Marine Drive at 1:30 a.m. Sunday.
They say officers performed CPR on the man until paramedics arrived, but he died from his injuries.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the department.

B.C. district issues wildfire evacuation order in remote area north of Fort St. John
The Peace River Regional District issued a new evacuation order as well as an alert Sunday in response to two wildfires burning in northeastern British Columbia.
The district says the Donnie Creek and Tommy Lakes wildfires pose an immediate danger and everyone must leave an area that’s used primarily by industry.
The evacuation order spans a remote area east of Highway 97, with the lower-level alert covering an area to the south.

GÖTZIS, Austria — Canada’s Pierce LePage won the Hypo Meeting decathlon event for his first international title on Sunday.
With the win, LePage ended fellow Canadian Damian Warner’s run of six straight wins at the event.
LePage, a 27-year-old from Whitby, Ont., who won silver at last year’s world championships, amassed 8,700 points, beating Warner’s 8,619, which was good for second. LePage’s score was one point short of his personal best.
