VANCOUVER — A forensic pathologist testifying in the trial of a man accused of murdering a 13-year-old girl in Burnaby, B.C., says she died by strangulation.
Dr. Jason Morin, who conducted the autopsy, says the four-hour procedure showed there had been a lack of blood supply to the girl’s brain.
He says he also identified a number of other injuries to her body, including bruising, scraping and tearing on the back of her head, as well as to her arms and legs.

SURREY, B.C. — Mounties in Surrey have arrested a 24-year-old man after a stabbing inside a local hospital.
Police allege the man assaulted two people visiting another patient at Surrey Memorial Hospital in what investigators call an “unprovoked assault.”
RCMP say they were called about a stabbing around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday and that the suspect was detained by hospital security until officers arrived.

Green Party deputy leader to run in upcoming Montreal byelection
OTTAWA — Green Party deputy leader Jonathan Pedneault is planning to run for a seat in the House of Commons in an upcoming byelection in Montreal’s Notre-Dame-de-Grâce—Westmount riding.
The 32-year-old ran on a joint ticket to share the party leadership in November with longtime member of Parliament Elizabeth May.
The party’s constitution has not yet been changed to make the pair co-leaders so Pedneault is the deputy leader.

Montreal’s new police chief says he’s seeing progress in the fight against gun crime after 100 days in office.
Fady Dagher told reporters today that between Jan. 1 and April 30, there was a single murder committed with a gun in the city — down from five during the same period the year before.
