OTTAWA — International Development Minister Harjit Sajjan says he did not know Sen. Marilou McPhedran was handing out unauthorized travel documents to hundreds of Afghans during the rise of the Taliban in 2021.
McPhedran told Parliament’s immigration committee last week that Sajjan’s then-chief of staff had given her a template for a “visa facilitation letter” that Afghans could use to clear checkpoints on their way to the airport to escape the country.

OTTAWA — A new law introduced today will change the criteria that require sexual offenders to be automatically added to a national registry that keeps track of them.
The change comes six months after the Supreme Court said it was unconstitutional to automatically add all people convicted of sexual crimes to the registry, and struck down parts of the Criminal Code that related to it.

BURNABY, B.C. — A forensic toxicologist says an initial drug screening report suggested Myles Gray had a natural psychoactive compound in his system when he died, but followup testing showed the low concentration didn’t meet the threshold for detection.

SASKATOON — Relatives of an Indigenous man left brain-dead after an altercation with police in Prince Albert, Sask., say he has died.

Montreal police say 175 officers are conducting search and seizures in connection with a homicide last month in the city’s east end.
