Safety board urges caution after B.C. water taxi crashes in thick fog
RICHMOND, B.C. — The Transportation Safety Board has issued a warning to small boat operators that they shouldn’t rely on a single electronic navigation aid, after a water taxi rammed a rock in thick fog off Tofino, B.C.
A report from the board says four of the five people aboard the Rocky Pass were injured when the boat came to an abrupt stop on the rocks on Jan. 25, 2022.
The operator, who had 20 years of experience captaining the taxi, was using GPS in very foggy conditions -

Woman found dead after firefighters douse blaze at Vancouver tent encampment
VANCOUVER — Police say a body has been found inside the remains of a burned tent at an encampment on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
A statement from Const. Tania Visintin says the woman’s body was found at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
Visintin says firefighters had just put out a fire at the encampment on Hastings Street when they discovered the remains.
A cause of death is under investigation.
Visintin says it appears the woman died before the fire started.

Jesuits of Canada releases list of 27 members ‘credibly’ accused of child sex abuse
MONTREAL — The Jesuits of Canada have released a list of priests and brothers they say were credibly accused of sexually abusing minors over the past 70 years.
The Jesuits, a religious order of the Roman Catholic Church, released the list of 27 names today following an audit that began in 2020 that looked at documents going back to the 1950s.
Of the men named, all but three are dead.

VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Canucks have signed forward Aidan McDonough to a two-year entry-level contract.
The 23-year-old led the Northeastern University Huskies with 20 goals and 38 points in 34 games in his fourth and final NCAA season.

Quebec hockey referee arrested for allegedly assaulting young player at end of match
QUEBEC — A 42-year-old hockey referee was arrested on Sunday for allegedly assaulting a young player at the end of a game in the Quebec City area.
Quebec City police spokeswoman Sandra Dion says officers were called to the arena in Ste-Foy at about 9:25 a.m. to respond to the incident, which happened as the teams were heading back to the locker room.

Fraser Valley farmland values see strong increase in 2022
ABBOTSFORD — Farm Credit Canada (FCC) has released some optimistic news for owners of farmland in the Fraser Valley and across British Columbia. According to its latest Farmland Values Report, the average value of Canadian farmland increased by 12.8% in 2022.
