EDMONTON — Alberta’s health minister says there will be $158 million in the upcoming budget to attract more physicians and other health-care professionals to fill gaps in care.
Jason Copping says the workforce is stretched and that demands will only increase as the population ages.
The budget is to be delivered Feb. 28, and Copping says than half the $158 million will be used for programs to recruit physicians to rural areas, which are feeling the brunt of the doctor shortage.

NEW YORK (AP) — Tim McCarver, the All-Star catcher and Hall of Fame broadcaster who during 60 years in baseball won two World Series titles with the St. Louis Cardinals and had a long run as the one of the country’s most recognized, incisive and talkative television commentators, died Thursday. He was 81.
McCarver’s death was announced by baseball’s Hall of Fame, which said he died Thursday morning in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was with his family.

QUEBEC — The Quebec government has tabled legislation to allow people with incurable diseases to make advanced requests for medical assistance in dying before they become incapacitated.
