Governments, B.C. coastal First Nations endorse marine protection action plan
VANCOUVER — The federal and British Columbia governments, alongside 15 coastal First Nations, have officially endorsed the blueprint for a vast network of marine protected areas along Canada’s west coast.
The federal government says in a news release the Marine Protected Area Network Action Plan will support efforts to conserve 25 per cent of Canada’s oceans by 2025 and 30 per cent by 2030.
It says it will provide a planned approach for the creation of new protected areas in th -
Advocates come together to help sailors stuck for months on tugboats in Quebec port
TROIS-RIVIÈRES, Que. — Groups that advocate for seafarers are expressing concern for 11 sailors who are spending a harsh Quebec winter aboard three tugboats that have been detained for months in the port of Trois-Rivières.
Paul Racette, who operates the Foyer des Marins seafarers’ club in the port, said the workers, who hail from Mexico, Cuba and Guyana, aren’t used to winter.
“For them, 17 degrees is cold, so imagine them having to work outdoors at th -
Crosby remains hopeful of playing at another best-on-best international tournament
SUNRISE, Fla. — Sidney Crosby isn’t giving up hope on one day playing at another best-on-best international tournament.
At least not yet.
The NHL skipped the 2018 Olympics for financial reasons before backing out of the 2022 Games because of COVID-19 concerns.
The league also hoped to stage a reimagined World Cup of Hockey in 2024, but Russia’s war in Ukraine was cited among the reasons for that event being pushed back at least 12 months.
Crosby, the 35-year-old captain of the -

Newfoundland family finds hockey jerseys lost during post-tropical storm Fiona
Three tupperware bins hold all that remains of Peggy Savery’s life and home since post-tropical storm Fiona ravaged her Newfoundland community and swept away most of her possessions last September.
But those bins now have some unexpected new additions — three hockey jerseys with strong sentimental value she thought were lost for good.
Savery, who grew up in Port aux Basques, N.L., and retired to her hometown with her husband four years ago, lost their home when it was destroyed -
Abbotsford police pull over foolhardy driver
ABBOTSFORD — Abbotsford police are reminding motorists that it doesn’t pay to be reckless behind the wheel and drive beyond the posted speed limit on city streets.
In a social media post, police say a vehicle was pulled over this week in Abbotsford and the driver was handed fines for hundreds of dollars.
“AbbyPD frontline officers were conducting speed enforcement on Downes Rd.,” states the post. It goes on to say the driver “was noted passing on a double solid line -

Ex-foreign minister heads to runoff for Cyprus presidency
NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — An exit poll by Cyprus’ state broadcaster showed Sunday that the country’s former foreign minister will advance to a Feb. 12 runoff for the presidency, although who his opponent will be remains too close to call.
According to the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation exit poll, Nikos Christodoulides garners between 30.5% to 33.5% to lead the two other frontrunners, who are virtually in a dead heat for second place.

Canadian Kyle Nelson fights to a controversial draw on UFC Fight Night card
LAS VEGAS — Canadian featherweight Kyle (The Monster) Nelson fought (The Korean Superboy) Doo-ho Choi to a controversial majority draw early Sunday on a UFC Fight Night card.
Choi, the fight favourite despite a 1,141-day layoff due to injuries and his mandatory Korean military service, would have won had he not been docked a point in the third round for a head butt.
UFC president Dana White said he “absolutely” thought the point deduction was wrong.

Canada sends military aircraft into Haiti’s skies as gang violence escalates
Canada has sent one of its military planes to Haiti to help the country cope with escalating violence.
A joint statement today from National Defence Minister Anita Anand and Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly says Canada has deployed a CP-140 Aurora aircraft to help “disrupt the activities of gangs” in Haiti.
Gang violence has become a reality for those living in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince since last summer, with hundreds having reportedly been kidnap -
Five things to know about health-care talks Tuesday between Trudeau, premiers
OTTAWA — On Tuesday in Ottawa, Canada’s 13 premiers and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will sit around the same table in person for the first time since COVID-19 hoping to find a path toward a new long-term health-care funding deal.
Both sides are optimistic a deal will emerge but there are some big divides to overcome, including how much more money Ottawa is willing to put on the table, and how much accountability the provinces are willing to put up in return.
The premiers have been -
Indigenous history class for lawyers justified and more common in Canada: experts
EDMONTON — As Alberta’s Law Society seeks to defend rules that require members to take a course on Indigenous issues, experts say such measures are common elsewhere in Canada and are well-grounded in legal rationale.
“It is increasingly common that law societies across the country are requiring continuing education in certain particular areas” that include cultural awareness, said Trevor Farrow of York University’s Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto.

NEMASKA, QUE. — Type the word “Nemaska” into a search engine and most results refer to Nemaska Lithium, the company that sought bankruptcy protection in 2019 before being partly bought out by the Quebec government’s investment agency. The episode resulted in tens of thousands of small investors losing significant savings.
However, Nemaska is above all a Cree community in the heart of the boreal forest, more than 1,500 kilometres from Montreal. They share their territory w -
Tiny wines find home in B.C.’s market, as Canadians consider reducing consumption
VANCOUVER — Wine lovers have growing options on the shelf to enjoy their favourite beverage as producers in B.C. offer smaller container sizes.
Multiple British Columbia wineries over the last several years have begun offering their product in smaller, single-serve cans and bottles.
Along with making wine more attractive to those looking to toss some in a backpack or sip on the golf course, the petite containers leave wineries with options for a potential shift in mindset as Canadian -

Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan martial ruler in 9/11 wars, dies
ISLAMABAD (AP) — Gen. Pervez Musharraf, who seized power in a bloodless coup and later led a reluctant Pakistan into aiding the U.S. war in Afghanistan against the Taliban, has died, an official said Sunday. He was 79.
Musharraf, a former special forces commando, became president through the last of a string of military coups that roiled Pakistan since its founding amid the bloody 1947 partition of India. He ruled the nuclear-armed state after his 1999 coup through tensions with India, an -

Anita Anand issued a statement hours later saying she and Prime Minister Justin Trudea -
Atlantic wins NHL all-star showcase; Horvat, Pettersson skate together one last time
SUNRISE, Fla. — Bo Horvat and Elias Pettersson did indeed get a final ride together.
They were hoping for one more.
Traded to the New York Islanders in a blockbuster deal at the start of the week, Horvat finished a hectic seven-day stretch alongside his former Vancouver Canucks teammate at the NHL’s 3-on-3 all-star tournament Saturday.
But the Pacific Division’s elimination in the semifinals by their counterparts from the Central meant they didn’t get a second opportunity -
