Record amount of opium found in Vancouver marine containers: border services
DELTA, B.C. — What started as a probe into some oddities with shipping pallets in Vancouver has ended with a record seizure of opium by the Canada Border Services Agency.
The agency says its investigators found 247 shipping pallets loaded with almost 2,500 kilograms of opium in several shipping containers at Vancouver’s port.
Nina Patel, the regional director general for the agency in the Pacific region, says the seizure in October is their largest such discovery.

MONTREAL — Longtime Quebec Major Junior Hockey League commissioner Gilles Courteau said he will retire part way through the 2023-24 season.
Courteau, who has been involved in the league for 47 years, said the process of finding a replacement will start early next year, with a new commissioner nominated in May 2023.
Courteau said he will remain on for the first half of the 2023-024 season to mentor his replacement.

CALGARY — Defender Ava Murphy headlines the Canadian women’s under-18 hockey team in its bid to defend its world title in Sweden in January.

TORONTO — An Indigenous-led think tank says progress is moving at a “glacial pace” seven years after the final report from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was released.
The Yellowhead Institute, based at Toronto Metropolitan University, says two of the report’s 94 calls to action were completed this year — bringing the total of completed calls so far to 13.

WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed linebacker Kyrie Wilson to a one-year contract extension.
Wilson returns for his sixth season in Winnipeg after his 2022 campaign was cut short when he sustained an Achilles injury in a Week 4 win over Toronto.

MONTREAL — A snowstorm forced the cancellation of a meeting scheduled today in Montreal between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Quebec Premier François Legault.

MONTREAL — CF Montréal has signed goalkeeper James Pantemis to a new contract for the 2023 Major League Soccer season, with option years in 2024 and 2025.

Olen Zellweger was firing puck after puck into the shooting cage one day following practice.
Lost in the off-ice training – picking corners and snapping rubber off iron – time must have got away from the defenceman and a couple of his teammates.
Because when they returned to their dressing room in the darkened arena, the door was locked.
