Respiratory illnesses surge beyond pre-pandemic numbers in Nunavut
IQALUIT, Nunavut — Nunavut health officials say there has been a surge of respiratory illnesses across the territory this year.
Dr. Sean Watchel, the territory’s chief public health officer, says cases of respiratory syncytial virus or RSV, along with the flu and COVID-19 have increased dramatically.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, there were 142 cases of RSV in Nunavut.
Watchel says there have been 493 infections and 86 hospitalizations so far this year.

Federal public servants to start returning to office next month with hybrid system
OTTAWA — The Treasury Board is expected to announce today that federal public servants will have to begin returning to the office a few days per week next month, with a phased-in hybrid model.
Employees in the core public service across all departments will be told to begin phasing in a return-to-office plan in mid-January, working in the office two or three days per week.

BOSTON — After a year-long delay the Premier Hockey Federation’s all-star weekend will make its Canadian debut next month in Toronto.
The PHF announced that the home of the league’s Toronto Six franchise will host the women’s hockey event, ending with the all-star tournament Jan. 29 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

Woman and adult granddaughter fatally shot inside Montreal apartment
Montreal police say a woman and her adult granddaughter were victims of a double homicide early this morning.

Six-month COVID-19 vaccine delay would have cost $156B: study
A study from the C.D. Howe Institute estimates Canada would have lost $156 billion in economic activity in 2021 had COVID-19 vaccines been rolled out six months later than they were.
That would have been equivalent to about 12.5 per cent of Canada’s gross domestic product.
“The results show that vaccination was highly beneficial to population health and also cost-effective from an economic perspective,” the think tank said in a report released Thursday.
