EDMONTON — Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is rejecting Opposition accusations that a bill granting her and her cabinet sweeping powers to rewrite laws behind closed doors is an undemocratic, dangerous power grab.
Smith told the house during question period that under her bill, cabinet can only take specific actions that are first approved by a majority of the legislature in a resolution.
However, legal experts say such resolutions are only recommendations, while granting cabinet wide scope

‘A different time:’ Stoumbos remembers Canadas first-ever World Cup goal
LORI EWING — Helen Stoumbos lined up for what would be a historic Canadian corner kick, all but swallowed up by a jersey that looked more like a red and white parachute.
“We got hand-me-downs, our uniforms were all extra extra large. And the jerseys didn’t have our names on them and FIFA specifications that our names had to be on the back. And actually our coaches sat the night before with a press, putting all our names on the back,” Stoumbos said with a laugh.

Chief coroner Lisa Lapointe says the increased toxicity and variability of street drugs has created an environment where everyone wh -

List of areas the Alberta government accuses Ottawa of overreaching
EDMONTON — When the Alberta legislature resumed sitting Tuesday, the first bill introduced by the United Conservative Party government was one aimed at shielding the province from federal laws it deems harmful to its interests.
The Alberta Sovereignty Within a United Canada Act was a key promise from Premier Danielle Smith when she was running for the leadership of the party, replacing Jason Kenney.
Smith said Tuesday that past efforts to work with the federal government have not worked an -
Vasek Pospisil: Canada’s Davis Cup victory a career highlight
TORONTO — Canada’s Davis Cup team developed a foolproof ritual before each of its matches along the way to the country’s first-ever championship.
All of the players would slowly start to clap in their locker room, letting the tempo and volume of their applause build. As it hit a crescendo, team manager Alain Beaupré would burst into the room and start yelling the name of the next Canadian to hit the court, with the other players exploding in laughter.

The Dallas Cowboys’ defeat of the New York Giants shown on Fox Thanksgiving Day was seen by an estimated 42 million people, Nielsen said. Two team -

Legal experts say Ottawa unlikely to be ‘main combatant’ in Alberta sovereignty fight
CALGARY — Constitutional law experts say it’s unlikely Ottawa will rush to fight Alberta over a proposed sovereignty bill that would give the provincial government new powers to resist what it considers federal intrusion.
Eric Adams, a constitutional law expert at the University of Alberta, calls the legislation “unprecedented” and an attempt to “rewrite the basic rules of federalism.”
But he doesn’t expect the federal government will engage.

Senate motion to strip ‘Honourable’ title could affect at least two former senators
OTTAWA — At least two former senators could be stripped of the title of “Honourable” following a motion the upper chamber passed Tuesday.
Former senator Don Meredith, who is facing criminal charges for sexual assault and harassment, was the impetus for a motion that passed in the Senate Tuesday.
But the motion also calls for former senators who have already been convicted of a crime to also lose the title, which senators normally carry for life.
That likely applies to Raymond L -

OTTAWA — A firearm advocacy group says the Liberal government’s effort to ban a wide variety of rifles is being driven by ideology, not public safety.
But the government says it’s all about prohibiting guns designed to kill people, and hunters will still have thousands of types of rifles and shotguns available to them.
The Liberal government wants to include an evergreen definition of a prohibited assault-style firearm in gun-control legislation being studied by the House of Co -

Largest recorded Alberta earthquake probably natural, scientist says
EDMONTON — A geologist says the largest earthquake ever recorded in Alberta was probably due to natural causes.
Rebecca Salvage of the University of Calgary says the 5.6-magnitude quake that rattled windows and shook homes near Peace River in northwest Alberta was likely too deep to have been caused any other way.
Energy extraction processes such as fracking have contributed to earthquakes in other parts of the province.
