Wind storm knocks out power to parts of Fraser Valley
CHILLIWACK — A powerful windstorm that swept across the southwestern B.C. overnight resulted in a series of power outages across the lower mainland including the Fraser Valley.
Nearly one thousand homes and businesses lost electricity just after midnight south of Hodgins Road and Ashwell Avenue in Chilliwack. According to B.C. Hydro, a tree had come down across power lines. Power was expected to be restored by 6 a.m.

Canada soccer fans gear up for do-or-die World Cup match against Croatia
TORONTO — Viewing parties are planned across the country today as soccer fans gear up to watch Canada’s World Cup match against Croatia — a do-or-die game for the team in its first tournament appearance in 36 years.

Giant trees still fall amid old-growth funding lag for B.C. First Nations

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — The U.S. soccer federation is displaying Iran’s national flag on social media without the emblem of the Islamic Republic, saying it supports protesters in Iran ahead of the two nations’ World Cup match Tuesday.
The federation said in a statement Sunday that it decided to forego the official flag on social media accounts to show “support for the women in Iran fighting for basic human rights.”

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Jack Hughes had his first career NHL hat trick, Vitek Vanececk made 38 saves against his former team and the New Jersey Devils beat the Washington Capitals 5-1 on Saturday for coach Lindy Ruff’s 800th victory.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — JT Miller had a goal and two assists and the Vancouver Canucks beat the Vegas Golden Knights 5-1 on Saturday night.
Vancouver won its second straight on a three-game trip that ends Sunday in San Jose. The Canucks have won four of five after a three-game skid.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Brett Pesce’s first goal of the season snapped a third-period tie and the Carolina Hurricanes ended a five-game winless streak with a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames on Saturday.

LAKE LOUISE, Alta. — Aleksander Aamodt Kilde opened defence of his World Cup downhill title with his first career victory in Lake Louise, Alta., on Saturday.

NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump is renewing attention to his long history of turning a blind eye to bigotry after dining with a Holocaust-denying white nationalist and the rapper formerly known as Kanye West just days into his third campaign for the White House.
