VIENNA — Canada’s Denis Shapovalov knocked off Britain’s Dan Evans in straight sets Friday to claim a semifinal spot at the Vienna Open.
Shapovalov fired seven aces and surrendered none en route to a dominating 6-3, 6-3 victory.
The 23-year-old Richmond Hill, Ont., native won 86 per cent of his first serves and converted three of 16 break points. Evans failed on all four of his chances to break Shapovalov’s serve.

VANCOUVER — Aviation regulators in Canada and the United States are being urged to order the immediate inspection of a type of Canadian-built float plane involved in a deadly crash in Washington state.
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board issued an urgent safety recommendation Thursday, calling on Transport Canada and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration to require immediate inspections of De Havilland Canada DHC-3 airplanes, better known as the DHC-3 Otter.

Federal government posts $3.9B surplus for April-to-August period
OTTAWA — The federal government posted a surplus of $3.9 billion for the first five months of its 2022-23 fiscal year.
In its monthly fiscal monitor, the finance department says the result for the April-to-August period compared with a deficit of $57.2 billion for the same time last year.
Government revenue for the period totalled $177.2 billion, up from nearly $149 billion a year ago, helped higher by broad-based improvement.
