TORONTO — As far as gut-punch playoff losses go, this one hurt more than most for the Toronto Blue Jays.
With a seven-run lead and support from a boisterous sellout crowd, a Game 2 victory seemed like a virtual lock in their wild-card series against Seattle.
The Mariners had other plans. They completed an improbable comeback with a pair of four-run innings before taking the lead in the ninth for a stunning 10-9 win.

‘Amsterdam’ and ‘Lyle Lyle’ struggle, letting ‘Smile’ repeat
NEW YORK (AP) — David O. Russell’s star-studded 1930s mystery “Amsterdam” flopped and the children’s book adaptation “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” debuted softly, allowing the horror thriller “Smile” to repeat atop the box office in U.S. and Canada theaters, according to studio estimates Sunday.Neither new release caught fire with moviegoers but the disappointment was most acute for “Amsterdam,” a poorly reviewed $80 million screwball r -
‘It’s time’: Maple Leafs know they’re running out of chances for playoff breakthrough
TORONTO — Kyle Dubas didn’t just double down.
The Toronto Maple Leafs general manager pushed his chips all-in – a decision that could go a long way in defining his tenure in the pressure-packed role he’s occupied since the spring of 2018.
Dubas once again resisted any potential off-season urge to blow up the core of his highly skilled yet playoff-success-starved roster following another first-round exit last May.
Toronto, in truth, showed better than in past post-season f -

Projection: Austria’s president to win 2nd term, no runoff
VIENNA (AP) — A projection indicates that Austria’s liberal president is on course to win a second six-year term without the need for a runoff vote.
The projection for ORF public television shortly after the last polling stations closed in Sunday’s election showed President Alexander Van der Bellen winning 54.6% of the vote. It gave a margin of error of plus or minus 2.1 percentage points.

Roadwork unearths remnants of 1800s Montreal zoo run by the ‘Canadian Barnum’
MONTREAL — Long before the Plateau-Mont-Royal became one of Montreal’s trendiest neighbourhoods, the area was home to a 19th-century botanical garden and zoo where Montrealers marvelled at the sight of hippopotamuses, acrobatic circus acts and a live whale in a tank.
This piece of history has resurfaced in recent weeks thanks to an archeological dig that unearthed what is believed to be part of a fountain marking the former site’s entrance.

On U.S. campaign trail and beyond, Trump’s familiar silhouette proving inescapable
WASHINGTON — He’s the Kevin Bacon of modern American politics, a familiar shadow that seems to loom over or lurk behind virtually every major storyline playing out on the U.S. campaign trail and beyond.
But forget six degrees of separation — with Donald Trump, it’s often only a couple.
Abortion controversy in Georgia? Trump and Herschel Walker are longtime friends. Kooky Republican hopefuls in key swing states? Chances are, they were backed by Trump. Fears of politi -
Youthful Canadiens head into season with plenty of building, learning to do
MONTREAL — After a 3-0 pre-season loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sept. 28, Montreal Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis summed up what may be the team’s mantra going forward.
“If you expect immediate understanding and execution, you don’t understand what teaching is,” he said.
The Canadiens, which will count on several young players in their first full season under St. Louis, will be a work in progress as the team builds toward the future.

Potent Edmonton Oilers ready to contend for Stanley Cup
EDMONTON — The Oilers have finished an eight-game pre-season schedule — and the veterans can’t wait for the real games to start.
“It’s nice to have one or two games, but I think you want to get ready to go and play when it counts,” said winger Evander Kane. “I think we should chop it to four (games), I think that makes the most sense, for players, anyways. There are bigger camps, more guys playing, and more players getting experience. But, as a veteran g -
Climate Changed: Communities on edge of catastrophe face choice of fight or flight
VANCOUVER — The idea of relocating his community isn’t one that Arnie Lampreau of the Shackan Indian Band in British Columbia’s Nicola Valley thought he’d be considering when he was elected chief early last year.
After wildfires torched the forests surrounding the band’s reserves and flooding swept away homes and the only highway access just months later, however, he said he now wants to see members living in a safer place.

Climate Changed: Catastrophe experts say retreat from flood risk is ‘critical option’
VANCOUVER — All climate disasters are not created equal and the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction recommends retreat in the face of only one type of threat.
“In our opinion, retreat is not an option that is important for most climate hazards in Canada. The hazard where retreat is really important and quite viable and a critical option involves flooding,” executive director Paul Kovacs said.

Competition Bureau probe of ‘flushable’ wipes goes down the drain
OTTAWA — To flush or not to flush?
It is a question Canada’s Competition Bureau says it cannot answer.
Three years ago, Friends of the Earth Canada and lawyers from Ecojustice filed a grievance with the bureau saying the makers of 20 disposable wipes were falsely advertising the products as safe to flush down the toilet.
In February, the Competition Bureau informed Friends in a letter that it was closing its inquiry because it’s not clear what it really means to be “flush -
