CALGARY — The Calgary Flames have signed defenceman MacKenzie Weegar to an eight-year, US$50-million contract extension.
Weegar was part of a July 25 trade with the Panthers that sent Matthew Tkachuk to Florida and brought Jonathan Huberdeau and Weegar to Calgary.

Quebec police investigate shooting at upscale resort in Laurentians
MONTREAL — Quebec provincial police say at least one person has been shot on the site of an upscale resort in the Laurentians region.
Police say the shooting occurred in Estérel, Que., a municipality about 100 kilometres north of Montreal.

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Mets drew their most average viewers on SNY since 2008 as the team returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
The Mets averaged 299,246 viewers this season, up 45% from last year’s 207,028, the network said Friday.

MONTREAL — Quebec provincial police say 31 people were arrested for threats against candidates during the province’s recently completed election campaign.
Police spokesman Nicolas Scholtus says a total of 217 reports were filed but several turned out to be unfounded or not retained because they involved derogatory comments that weren’t criminal in nature.

Canada to allow international students to work more hours due to labour shortage
OTTAWA — Immigration Minister Sean Fraser says Canada will temporarily allow international students to work more than 20 hours a week to help address ongoing labour shortages.
Speaking at a coffee shop in Ottawa this morning, Fraser says the changes will start on Nov. 15 and be in effect until the end of 2023.
The labour market remains exceptionally tight, with nearly one million job vacancies reported in the second quarter of 2022.
