COQUITLAM, B.C. — The Metro Vancouver Regional District says a small wildfire sparked in a park last Saturday is now considered under control.
A statement from the district says a 50-person firefighting crew has established a 15-metre “wet line” around the perimeter of the fire in Coquitlam’s Minnekhada Regional Park, preventing any further spread.
It says ground crews are now focused on dousing remaining hot spots.

VANCOUVER — Pharmacists in British Columbia are welcoming an expansion of their powers to prescribe drugs and give vaccines, but they also say that how the changes are implemented will matter.

Capsized boat that led to Montreal firefighter’s death not suited for rapids: report
MONTREAL — Quebec’s workplace health and safety board says a fire department boat that capsized during a rescue effort last year in rapids off Montreal, killing one firefighter, was not designed to be in that part of the St. Lawrence River.

Patty Hajdu ‘open’ to legislating fire codes on First Nations, but money is a factor
OTTAWA — Federal Indigenous Services Minister Patty Hajdu says she remains “open” to legislating fire and building codes on First Nations, even though Ottawa has no plans to do so now.
Fires have long posed a threat to people living on-reserve, with inadequate housing and a lack of smoke detectors increasing the risk.

OTTAWA — The federal government has more than doubled the amount of donations it will match to help the people of Pakistan recover from disastrous flooding.
