VANCOUVER — Vernon Adams Jr. is hungry.
While his first three games with the B.C. Lions have had ups and downs, the quarterback is missing an elusive milestone.
“We have to be scoring touchdowns. Man, I haven’t thrown a touchdown yet,” Adams, who was traded to the Lions by the Montreal Alouettes at the end of August, said Thursday. “So I’m excited and I need that touchdown this week.”
His next chance to find a teammate in the end zone will co

Toronto Blue Jays clinch post-season berth with Orioles’ loss to Red Sox
TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays secured a playoff berth Thursday without even taking the field.
Canada’s lone big-league team started the day with a magic number of one and locked up a wild-card spot when the Boston Red Sox defeated the Baltimore Orioles 5-3.
After an off-day, Toronto will continue its homestand Friday night with the opener of a three-game series against Boston.
The Blue Jays still have to plenty to play for over the final six games of the regular season.

VICTORIA — The road to reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples in Canada remains a long one, says Assembly of First Nations National Chief RoseAnne Archibald, who estimates it will take 40 years at the current pace to achieve the more than 90 calls to action in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report.
It has been a process of two steps forward and one step back over the past year, Archibald said in an interview ahead of Friday’s National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.& -

Judge Watch, Frankie Lasagna and Homer No. 61: On an unusual night at the ballpark
TORONTO — Baseball writers in Toronto were rather displeased a few years back when the press box was moved from behind home plate to a perch way out by the left-field foul screen.
The location paid off Wednesday on a historic night at Rogers Centre.
With Aaron Judge one homer shy of tying the American League single-season home run record, a few scribes made regular jaunts from their work areas to the elevator down the hall.
The goal was to quickly get down to the nearby outfiel -

OTTAWA — A Russian oligarch indicted in the United States today for conspiring to circumvent its sanctions regime stands accused of, among other things, having flowers delivered to a former member of Parliament in Canada.
Oleg Vladimirovich Deripaska has been subject to U.S. sanctions since 2018 and was added to Canada’s own sanctions list this year after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Despite being prohibited from obtaining U.S. goods and technology, the FBI alleges that -

Vancouver gas prices pass $2.39, breaking North American record: analyst
VANCOUVER — Gas prices in Vancouver have hit a new high of more than $2.39 a litre at some stations, blowing past the previous peak set this summer.
One gas analyst says that’s a new all-time record for North America, and expects prices to continue to rise this week.
Dan McTeague, president of Canadians for Affordable Energy, says prices passed the previous record of nearly $2.37 a litre, set in Vancouver in June, due to the temporary shutdown of refineries in the U.S. Pacific -
Trudeau rejects Russia referendum, again promises sanctions
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has condemned votes in occupied parts of Ukraine to join Russia, but gave no timeline for sanctions Canada promised a week ago.
Trudeau says the referendums are an attempt by Russia to redraw the map as it loses territory in the war it started in February.
Moscow claims people in the four regions it occupies voted upwards of 87 per cent to join Russia, but western governments say the process was rigged.
Trudeau says Russia is trying to justify its war -

TRC head questions why Catholic Church didn’t sell property to compensate victims
OTTAWA — The former head of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission says the argument the federal government made in 2015 that the Catholic Church was unlikely to raise the money it promised to residential school survivors is “blatantly dishonest.”
Murray Sinclair, a former senator, says the Catholic Church owns many properties across the country that it could have sold to fund the pledge it made as part of the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement.

Herd the news? Wild boar piglet adopted by cows
BERLIN (AP) — A cow herd in Germany has gained an unlikely following, after adopting a lone wild boar piglet.
Farmer Friedrich Stapel told the dpa news agency that he spotted the piglet among the herd in the central German community of Brevoerde about three weeks ago. It had likely lost its group when they crossed a nearby river.
Stapel said while he knows what extensive damage wild boars can cause, he can’t bring himself to chase the animal away, dpa reported Thursday.

The RCMP say Jeremy MacKenzie’s arrest yesterday was not influenced by Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s request to have them look into comments MacKenzie made about sexually assaulting Poilievre’s wife.
