CALGARY — A family doctor in Calgary has filed a human rights complaint over Ottawa’s decision to no longer require masks on airplanes to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The federal government has announced the end of mandatory vaccination, quarantine and masks on planes and trains starting Saturday.
Dr. David Keegan, who has a cardiopulmonary condition, said he was quite concerned when he heard Monday’s announcement and filed his complaint with the Canadian Human Rights Commis

OTTAWA — Parliament has passed a new law that allows jurors to disclose information about jury proceedings to health care professionals.
The bill creates a carve-out in Canada’s strict jury secrecy rules by allowing people to seek mental health support related to their trial experience without breaking the law.

YELLOWKNIFE — The Northwest Territories has confirmed its first case of avian influenza in a wild bird found in Yellowknife.
The territorial government said Wednesday that the herring gull was submitted to environment officials in mid-June and test results came back positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza this month.

B.C. illicit drug death toll nearly 1,500 this year: coroners service
VICTORIA — The coroners service in British Columbia says nearly 1,500 people have died this year from illicit drug use in the province.
New data from the service cites 169 drug deaths last month, representing a 12 per cent decrease from July, and equating to about 5.5 deaths per day.
It says illicit drug toxicity is the leading cause of unnatural death in B.C., with an average of 184 drug deaths each month since October 2020.

OTTAWA — Several civil society groups are pushing for changes to the Liberal government’s cybersecurity bill, saying it would undermine privacy, accountability and judicial transparency.

OTTAWA — A group of Black civil servants is filing a complaint to the United Nations Commission for Human Rights accusing the federal government of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and intolerance.

VANCOUVER — An Indigenous man and his granddaughter have reached an agreement with the Vancouver Police Board to settle a human rights complaint stemming from their handcuffing after they tried to open a bank account in 2019.

Transportation Safety Board probes tour boat sinking on Haida Gwaii
