In Port aux Basques, N.L., residents reeling after Fiona destroys dozens of homes
CHANNEL-PORT AUX BASQUES, N.L. — Jocelyn Gillam knows she’s lucky to be alive after coming face-to-face with the post-tropical storm that destroyed part of her southwestern Newfoundland town and nearly swept her away in a surge of rushing water.
Gillam was standing near her home in Port aux Basques on Saturday morning when a storm surge hit, sweeping her off her feet and dragging her underneath a Jeep as she clung to the undercarriage for dear life.
The 61-year-old said she’d b -

Sense of continuity at Raptors media day after a couple seasons rocked by pandemic
TORONTO — At this time last year, Nick Nurse had no idea what kind of team he had or how the season might play out, and the Toronto Raptors coach admitted as much.
Gone was longtime leader Kyle Lowry, rookie Scottie Barnes’ was still unproven, and the team had no true centre.
Fast forward a year, and continuity was a theme of Monday’s traditional Raptors’ media day.
“I was sitting up here a year ago and we didn’t have any idea who we were, identity-wise &helli -

OTTAWA — The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is asking Canadians to keep an eye out for an invasive bug that could spell disaster for the country’s wineries and fruit growers.
The spotted lanternfly is a pest native to China that has been making inroads in the United States since 2014.
Thus far, the small grey-and-red insect with spotted wings has not been found alive in Canada.
But in early September, hundreds of adults were found in a residential area in Buffalo, N.Y., just 45 km a -

Milano, Demers, DeKeyser, Virtanen among players on PTOs trying to crack NHL rosters
Sonny Milano had a long summer — and not just because his team missed the NHL playoffs.
Despite putting up 14 goals and 34 points in 66 games with the Anaheim Ducks in 2021-22, the winger was surprisingly cut loose and hit the open market after not receiving a qualifying offer.
All the 26-year-old could do was wait for another organization to show interest and sign him in unrestricted free agency.
The problem? A new deal never materialized.
“I was hoping for a contract,&r -
MPs to study Access to Information system, federal ‘culture of secrecy’
OTTAWA — The House of Commons information, ethics and privacy committee plans to look at Canada’s much-maligned access-to-information regime — the latest in a long line of studies of a system intended to make government more transparent.
Conservative MP Pat Kelly, the committee chairman, says the system is plagued by excessive delays and a culture of secrecy that has been “baking in for decades.”
