CHILLIWACK — The City of Chilliwack reported on social media Wednesday afternoon that upwards of eight Chilliwack Fire Department units that responded to a blaze up in Promontory have now controlled the fire.
According to its Twitter page posted just before noon and at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday, eight trucks from all fire halls, including halls from downtown, South Sumas, Greendale, Yarrow, and Ryder Lake, responded to a wildland fire near Teskey Road.

Mounties in N.W.T. search for suspect after 1 dead, others injured in stabbing
FORT GOOD HOPE, N.W.T. — RCMP in the Northwest Territories are looking for a suspect in a stabbing that has left one dead and others injured.
Mounties told residents in Fort Good Hope on Tuesday night to stay in their homes but lifted the advisory this morning.
However, they have asked residents of the community to “remain vigilant.”

TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays optioned reliever Julian Merryweather to Triple-A Buffalo on Wednesday afternoon and recalled left-hander Foster Griffin from the Bisons.

Police say man found dead in running vehicle in Surrey, B.C., was fatally shot
SURREY, B.C. — An Alberta man has been identified as the victim of the latest fatal shooting in Surrey, B.C.
Homicide investigators say 27-year-old Richard Ofosuhene of Edmonton was found Tuesday, injured and unconscious, in the driver’s seat of a running vehicle on a Surrey street.
Police say Ofosuhene was known to police and had ties to drug trafficking in Alberta but they believe his homicide is an isolated incident.

Trudeau to attend assassinated Japanese PM Shinzo Abe’s state funeral in Tokyo
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will attend a state funeral for Japan’s assassinated former prime minister Shinzo Abe next week in Tokyo.
The 67-year-old Abe, who had stepped down as prime minister in 2020, was killed in July during a political campaign event in Nara, Japan.

CHILLIWACK — Without any comment at its meeting Tuesday (Sept. 20), Chilliwack City Council voted to allow an application for a proposed liquor store at Cottonwood Mall to proceed towards a public hearing on October 4.
Chilliwack City Council gave the application first and second reading Tuesday, and allowed a proposal that would rezone a section of the Cottonwood Mall from a shopping centre to a liquor store and renovate the existing food court area and remove a section of Dollarama.

OTTAWA — The Snowbirds have been cleared for takeoff after a crash in B.C. last month forced the military’s famed aerobatics team to cancel appearances at several air shows.
Military investigators say the crash near Fort St. John on Aug. 2 was caused by an improperly assembled oil filter.
The crash happened when one of the Snowbirds’ nearly 60-year-old Tutor jets lost engine power while taking off and crashed into a fence.

CALGARY — Alberta Premier Jason Kenney says a new airplane manufacturing plant is to be built near Calgary.
De Havilland Canada is scheduled to make the announcement Wednesday afternoon about its plans for southern Alberta.
